Re: 427 sbc is it possible???

with enough fabrication skills and the right driveshaft, you can put anything in these cars... as far as straight drop in, I think you might have to relocate the motor mounts...

A 427 SBC will be dimensionally equivalent to a 305 SBC. You don't need to move motor mounts.

Tall valve covers, raised exhaust ports, large primary tube header routing - all of those things are a different issue.

There will be many due to essentially punching out a SBC motor to the max. You may even have to get an aftermarket block as stock 400's are fragile and need a lot of machine work to get the big crank in.

And as someone else mentioned, exhaust will be an issue.

A tuned carb will make within a few HP of EFI, although the carb won't be as smooth nor get the same fuel ecoonomy.

You don't need a 427 to do that.

I assumed you were buying an assembled 427 crate engine. I've only seen them built with aftermarket blocks, so I didn't say anything about that. But, like paul_huryk said, you don't do this with a stock factory block - if that's what your source is doing, go somewhere else.

SBCs are all the same, anything that will fit any SBC will also fit an SBC 427.

you can build a 436 chevy from factory block just have to take time to find a good one.thats what i did has .250 thousands bores that was at 40 thousands over.makes 600 hp,650ft.lbs.and have had no issues.

Re: 427 sbc is it possible???

Just to give you a little insight yes a 427 SBC will fit. I Just finished installing one in my 89 Iroc. I have the Dart Little M block. I have 1/3/4 Hooker Headers installed on the car and the clear fine. The are very close the the wheel housings but they do clear. I also instaled a M21 tranny into the car. Everything on these cars requires fabrication, nothing goes the way it should. So just have plenty of patience and it ill all go together. Hope this helps.

Re: 427 sbc is it possible???

I know im new to this board but i can tell you a little about the 427 sbc set up... I had one in my 94 s10 ss... It dyno tested at 560 whp @ 6400 rpm (thats as high as we spun it... should have more hp at even higher revs as the new cam produced power all the way to 7800 rpms) and 670 ftlb torque @ 4525 rpm...and over 500 ftlbs of torque from 2900 rpms all the way up to 6400 rpms... And was street driven every day...

I sold the truck befor i could really get it dialed in with the new cam... but it was a monster... If you have any questions about the engine i will do my best to answer them...

I will say they are not cheap to build with the cost of the aftermarket block but well worth the money in my book... With the bore and stroke combos you can go all the way up to 454 ci...

If i would have had a really good set of heads and a better carb i will bet i could have pushed over 650 rwhp...

Re: 427 sbc is it possible???

that all depends on the smog laws in yor area... here in knoxville we do not have smog police...

I do know a few general things about smog laws and the main one is that any and all emissions devices that were on the car new will need to be on the new combo... things like egr purge vanisters cats and in some cases smog pumps would all need to be on the new motor no matter what it is...

once you start strapping emissions devices on any motor you start to loose hp... my truck had no smog devices what so ever... so in most areas it would not have been legal...

Sorry to rain on you're parade, but you want a small block 427 with at least 500+ hp to kill the imports ( overkill? ) AND be smog legal... i doubt it.

And the fact that you don't know the dimensions of a SBC motor tends to point that you should prolly be doing a bit more research before diving into this.

More power to you if you do it but expect to change out the whole powertrain from motor to rear end. You should expect to run solid motor mounts as well. And get plenty of chassis stiffening or it will turn into a pretzel.

Hey everyone has to start somewhere. Better to ask questions and have your mistakes pointed out to you than to make em and cost you time and money ( you can always get more money but you can never get back time wasted )

Re: 427 sbc is it possible???

LS7 is the only one that will be smog legal and make that power probly. i'm not sure you culd get a sbc at 500+hp on motor and still pass smog although i've seen stranger things so maybe it would be possible. Depends on the state

if its an 8-71 then you will be at the largest i'd suggest for the street.

if you want a S/C sbc then look into the magnacharger sold as the E-Tec charger through edelbrock. Or a vortech/ procharger would suffice

Re: 427 sbc is it possible???

I've been drewling over that Hardcore 427 myself it will fit in a third gen no problem, smog compliance well Holly makes a MPFI system called the Commander a few friends here in NY are using it, one's a 383 stroker (wickedly cammed) and the other is a mild 400 and they pass smog here (barely) so it could be done with the 427 however with this sistem you will need a different hood, the 383 car is using a home modded big block corvette style unit and the 400 car has a 2" cowl. I hope I helped at least a little bit, good luck and good hunting.
