Ex-police cruiser

i have an 84 Camaro SC with the factory option 305/5.0L H.O. from the Z28 model. the rear end is at least 3.23 if not 3.73.

i've been looking at a new engine. my dad has a 99 Tahoe with a 350 in it that he wants to get rid of. the tahoe is an ex-police cruiser so the computer is programmed for speed. that tahoe really flies when u floor it and it'll squel the tires at 45 mph in second gear. is this a good idea or should i go with 350/290 crate motor?

o yea the motor has about 201,000 miles on it and runs great

Re: Ex-police cruiser

The computer for the tahoe won't work..... the weights are completely different, it will need tuned. It depends on the price and condition of the engine, as to which might be better.

I've never been one to worry about mileage.... the running 305 i pulled from my firebird was at 227k. Now over a year later it is still running strong in a 3/4 ton 4x4. The engine's third vehicle.

The Tahoe induction is a weird set-up, never used in passenger cars. Forget it.

The easiest, least expensive, and arguably best approach would be to put your 305 induction set-up (carburetor, distributor, etc.) on the '99 Vortec, using a Vortec spreadbore intake manifold.

You will need a different flexplate. '86-'92 3rd gen f-body will be the proper one to get. About $35-50 is all you're looking at.

Don't forget it....Yes the Vortec ECM could be swapped in, but I'm not saying it would be an easy swap.

If you are real good with diagrams & such, it is entirely possible & a good choice. It's just gonna take some good harness splicing.
