Installing 327 in a 1984 Firebird...Please Help
Hi,
I just got a 327 from a 68 C10 and want to put it into my 1984 Firebird which currently has a 305 carbed. What all do i need to do to put this in or can i just drop it in? Do I need to find a computer or anything like that? Will the 327 fit? Any help will be valuable. Thank you very much!

you wont have to do anything but drop it in if you carb it no need for a computer just check your oil pan clearance i droped a 350 in my car that was out of an 1969 c10 no issues besides finding a oil pan and a dip stick for the driver side

The '84 computer should run the engine just fine if you transfer over all of the computer stuff (carb, distributor, sensors, etc.).
The 305 intake manifold will be better than the 327 manifold.
The 327 dipstick is on the driver's side. If you use stock exhaust manifolds, the tube and manifold try to occupy the same space at the same time.
The biggest issue is whether or not the heads have the accessory holes on the ends of them. If not, use your 305 heads on the 327.

The 68 probably won't have accessory bolt holes. It will probably also have a short water pump and all the accessory brackets will be different because of this. Installing some newer heads that have accessory bolt holes will allow you to install all the accessories off the 305 directly onto the 327. Install a long water pump onto it, but then you need a newer crank pulley also so all the belts will line up.

With heads with accessory holes, all of the '84 305 parts will transfer over.

Be careful if you use your 305 their small cc's are going to push your compression high, if thats what you want thats good. i personally used 76 350 heads on my 327 swap and all the accessories went on. I used flowtech shorty headers to deal with the exhaust and dipstick cleaarence thing but I had to make a custom y pipe. i know summit has a flexable dipstick that might work if you want to use your orginal manifoilds. As for the computer i have mine still in the car but i'm not really using it. My 327 was out of a chevelle so I had no oil pan problems. if you use the 700r4 for your tranny either get a new flywheel and starter or use the 305's like i did. It bolted up just fine. my swap was personally a pain because of how messed up my engine bay wiring was. but i love the 327 csb, hope your swap goes well and enjoy
----------
i used all of my 305 acessories so the short water pump went on just fine

being a 68 block it wouldnt hurt any to take the heads off and give it fresh set of gaskets use your heads if you want and then id at least would go with a performer rpm intake that wouldnt hurt either

I'm using a performer and it works great. Oh and if you do use the 68 heads they probley don't have hardned valve stems, so pump gas wouldn't be good for them. But you can easily put in hardned valve stems. If your decideing to use a mechnachil fuel pump make sure you use one with a return line. My chevelle pump didn't have one, put an 86 ta vin h pump works fine. Because all the newer parts will work on a small block. For some reason my stock gages didn't like the swap engine(Beats me, i'm still working out bugs) so I ran aftermarket. Just some things to be aware of

You shouldn't have any problem going from an 84 to the 327 as far as tranny goes. I was trying to put my 327 in tonight only to find out that I have the wrong flexplate. For some reason I though the one on the 305 would bolt up
. Ha! Be sure to get a flex plate for a 69. Most parts websites list a 168 tooth plate for the 68 that is about 2" larger in diameter, thus requiring a different starter. If you go with the 69-85 flexplate, that is 153 tooth, so you don't have any other issues. I had to figure this all out the hard way.
Also, just to let you know. If you don't have the harmonic balancer on yet, 1969 was the first year for the balancer retaining bolt. You'll have to drill and tap for that if you really want one unless it's already been done.
