305to 350 tpi question

I just bought an 86 iroc and the previous owner took out the 305 tpi and put in a crate 350. The motor runs HOT!!! and i was told that i need to have a custom burnt computer chip because the car is still sending air and fuel to a 305 causing the new motor to run lean which = heat. My question is can i use a chip for an 87 witha 350 or do i really need to have one burnt? I'm not really good at this stuff yet so as simple as you can make it would be great. Thanks for your time. All the other components have been checked......air dam, water pump, radiator, thermostat, fan, so i'm thoroughly confused

Re: 305to 350 tpi question

so the car is a 350 w/305 tpi correct?
If so,theres a few parts you'll need.
you will need a 350 chip,inj.,knock sensor,esc module,and I believe thats about it.

That's right. You'll need a chip for a 350, and injectors. If it's a stock 350 with a stock cam then just find out what year car the motor came out of and car if possible. Then see if you can get one. The ESC is the Electronic Spark Control. It uses the knock sensors to retard the timing if detonation is detected.

You don't "need" a 350 chip. '86-'89 were MAF, which isn't as sensitive to mapping. You might get a little more power out of a 350 chip, but you'd also get more power with PROM tuning. '89 didn't have the cold start injector, so the only "stock" 350 chips you should consider are '87-'88.

Where is the timing set? Was it set with the ESC wire disconnected? Retarded timing is much more likely to cause overheating than a 305 MAF chip.

Re: 305to 350 tpi question

I'll have to have my buddy come over and check the timing. Where should it be set? The motor that went in was a crate motor about 4 years ago so i'm not sure what cam is in it or of the injectors. I'll look into these as soon as possible.

6 degrees BTDC with the ESC wire disconnected.
