86 T/A to receive Fast Burn 838 Crate Engine. Fit and hood clearance?
86 T/A to receive Fast Burn 838 Crate Engine. Fit and hood clearance?
I have a 1986 Trans Am with a 305 4bbl. and a TH700R4.
I want to swap out the engine with the Fast Burn 383 crate engine from GMPP (the remainder of the car will be 'adjusted' to manage the power).
My first concern is the clearance of the FB 383 crate engine under the hood. What do I need to change on that crate motor (if anything) to ensure it all fits under the hood?? Does the intake manifold need to be changed ? If so, what the change in power, and can that be minimized?
Second concern, what other engine instalation nightmares might there be related to swapping in this engine??
Thanks!

It should be a very straight forward swap. Depending on the carb and intake, you should be able use your stock hood. The wiring for the starter, alt, dizzy, and everything else should all work. Main thing is the cooling will need upgraded.

383, perhaps?

Thanks for the comment.
I am thinking that I will have to use low rise dual plane intake manifold to make the clearance under the hood of the 86 Trans Am.
Would you agree?
Or can I still use the recommended Vortec intake manifold ?
I have no intention to make a hold in my hood. :-P
Thanks.

I would try it with the manifold that comes onn there. It will be pretty close, but I think it would fit.

Is that a 383 stroker or a 350/385 fast burn?
I am interest to see people doing the 385 hp fast burn I am thinking of putting that in with my tbi set up.
And yeah i dont want to cut holes in my hood either so I'll follow this thread a while to see how your making out
