Hello,
I recently traded for a 1968 327 2-bolt out of a Malibu that has been bored out .040 over, and it needs a rebuild. I was planning on completely going through it, and throwing it into my '84 LG4 car. I was curious, I know the 305 and the 350 are very parts-compatible but I wasn't so sure about the 327. I thought the 350 and 327 are the exact same block with the same bore, just a little different stroke. How hard would this engine be to throw in my car, and would it bolt up to 305/350 headers and a 350 turbo tranny? Sorry for the dumb question, I just don't want to get too far ahead of myself with this.

Headers, motor mounts, bellhousing.... all the same. It is a very easy swap. If you decidied on a 350 instead it's just a 3.48 stroke instead of a 3.25 along with different pistons.

Thanks alot for the reply. I'd just hate to have dropped so much money into the motor and find out it would end up costing even more for something I didn't know about.

In your post you state 327 is now at 040 and in need of re-build, If I remember correctly, 327's do not like 060 if you have to re-bore the block..
Ask you machinist to sonic test the meat left in the walls for your own good.. You don't wanna throw good money 4 nothing!!!

He said that it's been pulled apart and everything is still within factory specs and that the cylinder walls were checked out too and are in great shape. I think he just suggested a rebuild because it's an older engine, but I was planning on tearing it down and replacing everything anyways. There was something about the crank needing to be machined. As for heads, I don't know yet. I've never (re)built an engine, so it'll just be something to tinker with. I'm open to any suggestions.

How much for the 40 year old mill to be rebuilt? Get it on paper... Did he run a dial-bore guage in the cylinders to check if conical or not??? What are the numbers?? If I were you, I would go for a crate engine with a guarantee and then, maybe take the 305ci apart you have in your signature just for the heck of it and kinda practice on that and see what makes an engine tick... Lotta the ole stuff begs to be re-done such as heads / blocks / rods re-sized etc etc etc. 327's liked to be revved to get into their power band.
I would go crate with warranty and leave the 327 to a numbers restorer type person... T.

I'm not doing all the work myself. I've thought about a crate engine, but what's the fun in using an engine that's already put together? I've never touched a car mechanically more than just an oil change, tune-up, things of that nature but I recently rebuilt the Q-jet and it turned out really well. I know rebuilding an engine and a carb are alot different, but I'd like to learn about them still. If the 327 is in good shape, I'm gonna give it a shot anyways.

Alright well I just got the engine and tore it all apart. I wanted to get some opinions on parts for it (when I can afford it... Wanted to start a list early) I'd like to know, for a -relatively- quick engine that you could build from the block up, what setup would you guys use? Right now, the heads I have for it are off of a 70's Suburban, the original crank, the stock intake manifold and one other off of an earlier 60's small block. I got a AFB Carter carb that's been rebuilt by Edelbrock and never been used, and the freshly rebuild Q-jet on my car now. What parts would you suggest to make a good, strong 327? Thanks alot.

Put rings and bearings in the 327 (you mentioned the crank needed machine work - verify that, get it turned if necessary, and the right undersize bearings). Get a Comp XE268 cam kit w/lifters, or something like it, and a new timing set. Standard rebuild stuff like oil pump and gaskets. Then remove the 305 from the car, put whatever the 327 is missing from the 305 onto the 327, install it in the car.

The 70's Suburban heads are boat anchors or door stops - they don't belong on an engine in a 3rd gen. Ditto the carter/Edelbrock carb vs. q-jet, and whatever "stock" intake you're talking about other than the one on your 305.

Nonsense. Any engine's powerband is dependent upon the cam, intake, etc. CID has nothing to do with it.

What do you suggest for heads? I don't really want to spend upwards of $1,000 for aluminum heads, so maybe find a junkyard *something* with decent heads and get them rebuilt? Plus it still needs pistons and all that nonsense. Thanks for the reply
