305 carb to 350 carb

Hey guys its me again finally got sick of the stupid 305. My Father in law has a 84? monte that he is putting a 383 w/ t56. So I get the 350 bored 40 over and 700r4. The package only has 200 miles since his rebuild 8 years ago. Untold hours of running. He started it every week till last week.

If I am swapping it out with what I got, going without computer, mech everything with a vac switch for the 700r4. How long should it take. Its my first swap. I have to get it done in 2 days of work.

I know the following I have to do before pulling.
1. A/C
2. P/s
3.Alt
4. Dist/
5. Fuel Pump
6. Radiator
7. trans lines

What else am I missing. about how long would it take to change it out.

I'd give it longer than 2 days if it's your first swap.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb

A couple of days is relative. How long are these days going to be. The swap it self is not always the only problem its all the little issues you run into along the way. I had several problems on my swap (it was my first). It took like 4 days of actual work to finally get the car going down the road. The swap was done in a day and a half but there was a stupid amount of problems.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb

I am trying to stop the problem by killing the computer and going all mech on it. The electrical system is shot and the Lock Up is not functioning as it should be.

Is the carb you'll be running already set up for the TH700? If not, you need to get a TV geometry correcter bracket to go on the throttle arm. Without it, you'll mess up the transmission.

Just an example of the details that will come up and bite you. In 2005, I thought I was doing a fairly simple swap of the 305 shortblock with a 350. I thought I had all the parts lined up (was also putting in a rebuilt TH700 at the same time). Then I decided to send the headers out for Jet Hot coating. They came back dented, had to fix that. I had to go on company travel, took away from garage time. Should have been a couple of weeks max, took me 2 months. At least it fired up the first time it turned over. Did have to drop the tranny pan to change out switches and wiring because the replacement tranny was set up differently.

Don't even want to talk about the current LS1/T56 swap.

But, then, my wife already knows to take my time estimates and multiply them by 4. . .

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb

I will also be going from a crapped out cc carb to either a edelbrock or holly carb. what do you guys think is better. I have headman headers Long tube going in. The Y pipe will have a custom one made for like 60 dollars at a local mom pop shop. The rad is being replaced with a OEM replacement, and maybe ad a trans cooler.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb

I've run edelbrok and Holley back to back on a couple of engine builds. I think the edelbrock is more fuel efecient, and easier to tune, but the Holley makes better power on every engine I've built.
One more thing, the edelbrock requires less maintnace on anything that is not driven on a daily bassis. I don't think I've ever owned a holley that doesn't leak.

Holley's have been given a bad rap. They don't require constant tuning. Mine doesn't leak.

If I was given an Edelbrock, I'd list it on eBay as soon as I could.

But, do what you want.

57kid, so you would not want the edelbrock or would you. I have been reading the carb boards, and I am going with a Vac Secondaries, since I have a 700r4.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb

So I have been reading and I can switch the Tailshaft housing from the Camaro to the Monte Trans. Sweet, I just need to helo coil the trans mount holes due to them being striped, before I got the car.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb

Well finally got it in and running,

Day 1:

Removed motor/trans
Put in motor/trans

Day 2:

Put on acc
Conected Driveline

Day 3:
Torque Arm (took a while)

Now I need to find out if I can hook up a Switch to the ALDL for the Trans Lock, even though I have no ECM?

Yes, as long as you haven't butchered any wiring.

Re: 305 carb to 350 carb

Apeiron, I have an external psi switch for TCC lock up. I am suppost to plug it into the side of the tranny, at the 4th gear pressure port. Will it work to wire it up. In essance it is suppost to lock up in 4th gear at high pressure.

Or should I get a vac switch and run it off the carb, the trans had a TCC lock up on it before.

Check the sticky at the top of the carb forum, it goes into detail about various arrangements to handle the TCC.

It works the same way as a 4th gear switch inside the transmission.

You have to remove the transmission pan.
