T5 & V8 questions
The T-5 likely won't hold up, but if you want a 5 speed you could go with one of the Tremec 5 speeds from Keisler, Fortes, or a number of other sources. They even have a version that will bolt up to your early bellhousing and replace a traditional 4 -speed like a BW or Muncie.

Reading through this thread for info and found this post.
What do you mean the T-5 won't hold up? I'm just trying to put a slightly modded 305 or 350 into my Trans Am. It def won't be a 400 or 455. And surely won't be near 300hp. I figured my chevy T-5 trans was ok to use, since it's not been more than 2 years since a rebuild with new clutch and flywheel....no?
I still have plenty to read...but here's what I'm still unsure about.
I don't know which V8 motors I can take from which chevy cars at the junkyard from which years. Isn't the 5.7 350 pretty popular among many models in the 80's? Can I perhaps pull one from a wrecked Caprice?? Well...even if I can't find a 350...I'd settle for a meager 305 for now. I just want the car to run. I need an engine, ANY engine. =)

HP is not what hurts the T5, it's the TQ that hurts its feelings that is why chevy did not place the T5 behind the TPI 350. I have done it many times and i ALWAYS ended up rebuilding that T5....... I am hard on trannies but damn i had every high dollar part i could get TQ is KING and it made my T5 its biatch.

Alright. Someone here must know. Some of you are engine builders.....you restore these classic cars.
I need to know ALL of the engines that will mate up to a T-5 manual transmission. ANY V8. I just want the car running, so I'm going to straight swap a carb'd V8 into the car for now, so I'll have lots of time to rebuild the broken high pony motor.
My car is an 85 T/A. Can I plz get a list of carb'd motors I can transplant? I tried looking it up on wiki, but the drivetrain isn't original so that doesn't really help.
Much appreciated!!!

Actually any Chevy V8 except Gen III & up.
The bigger issue is the flywheel & clutch. The flywheel has to match the engine rear main seal type and be 153 tooth (168 tooth won't fit in the bellhousing). And, the clutch has to match the flywheel and T5 input shaft (not a big deal).

Re: T5 & V8 questions
Just my $0.02.... Pay close attention to what U have already before choosing a replacement. What side is the dipstick on? Around 80 they changed from pass to drivers side. Will parts from old motor be used? I found there is a difference between 86 back and 87 up with intakes and flywheels. This can be overcome but not without buying more parts. I found a 90 motor for my 82 but had to spend extra money to get it to work. Good luck hunting and be wise in your choice.
