Well, if you don't want straight forward, and are looking to do something way out there, the new bmw v8 or a duramax. If you wait till 2010, there's gonna be a 4.5l duramax that will fit in the space of a sbc. Or just go for an ls block. I probably didnt help. Sorry. Dear old St Patty.

Did Mr. Awesome have a good beer buzz going there? :-) I sure hope so. I didn't get the chance. Yeah, you really have to start by choosing an engine family. Like traditional small block chevy, or newer LSx? You should start by telling us your budget, your experience with mechanic work, your resources, like garage? tools? and your expectations for this swap. Can you spend all summer on it? What will you do with the car when it's finished? You want stick or automatic? Any particular horsepower level you want? The more you tell us, the more helpful we can be.

The mechanic work isnt a problem and im able to spend a while on it. Im lookin for under 5000 and more in a newer model engine. I want a solid v8 engine thatll fit in my RS. I was thinkin a maybe a small block chevy engine. And its a automatic. The car runs great, i just wanna swap the v6 out for an v8.

Re: What kind of engine should i get?

Your three best options are an L98, an LT1, or an LS1. The L98 was offered in '91 Camaros, so it'd be the most straightforward. But for a budget of $5000, you could just go out and buy a V8 camaro, and have 2 good-running cars. $5000 should get you into a registerable, inspectable '95 Z28, the best year for the LT1, and the highest-production year of the 4th gen, with their superior brakes and front suspension. Back to your engine swap. The LT1 bolts in like an L98, but is really a swap, where an L98 is more of a replacement. Still, exhaust is easier than an the LS, and unlike the L98, the LT1 is rev-happy. A stock L98 is strong to 4800, but at 4800 it hits a wall and goes dead. My LT1 with nothing but a Hypertech programmer, pulled hard to 6200 rpm, time after time, and still cruised 65 mph at just 1600 rpm, effortlessly. The LS will do the same thing, but from 3500 rpm on up, it's noticeably stronger. It's also smoother. I suppose the best advise is to drive one of each.

what im worried about if when i get a v8 itll fit in the car. ive been told that the v6 RS was made for a v8 and that one would fit fine but im skeptical. also where is the best place that i can find a LS1 or L98 engine?

Re: What kind of engine should i get?

If your maximum budget is $5000, you can't go spending $4900 of it on a new engine. Your V6 trans won't bolt to the V8, and it won't survive the torque of the V8.All 3 of those V8s are an easy fit into your car. If you do go LS, it is the most costly, most difficult swap, but the most powerful, short of a big block. But the LS can also be the lightest, by virtue of an aluminum block. And if you're gonna do a swap, you're going to need something else to drive until the swap is complete.
