350 olds swap
350 olds swap
i have a 82 firebird. i would like to put in a 350 olds. Why? because i already have the engine and theres no engine in the car. i have frame mounts from a 72 cutlass. will they work? also i need to know what headers to use: brand name and out of what car?

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Not sure how to break this to you, but already having an engine is about the worst reason to try to put it in a 3rd gen. The answers to your questions are no, none, and none. You're looking at a bunch of fabrication. And that's the good news - wait until you hear the part about the transmission.
Can it be done? Sure. Has it been done? I'm sure it has, a
of this forum will probably bring up something. But, unless you're up to a bunch of fabrication to install what is arguably an underperformer (you might have a better case with an Olds 455), sell the engine to finance something that is a little closer to fitting and/or is supported by the aftermarket.

Re: 350 olds swap
ok the 350 olds engine came out of a 72 cutlass that wieghed 3750 lbs with me in it and ran a 12.25 at 110 mph. now what do u think it would do in a 3000 lb car. thats the reason. im puting everything that came out of the cutlass into it. including all brackets and turbo 350 transmision. so the only info i need is what headers to use. and i already know im going to have to drill holes for the mounts. And the reason i took it out of the cutlass is because i put a big block in it. and by the way i already had a small block chevy built the same as the olds motor and only ran a 13.50.

Not bad for a 350.
But, the answer is still the same. No headers are available. If you want headers, they are going to have to be custom fabricated. The end result isn't going to be nearly as favorable as it was in the Cutlass.
You're also talking about a TH350 swap. You can use 3rd gen TH350 conversion crossmember kits for that. But, that doesn't help you with getting the engine in the engine compartment and routing headers.
You might consider a tubular front crossmember. You'll still have to fabricate mounts, but at least you'll have more room to do that, and especially more room for the headers.
What heads did you have on the SBC?

Re: 350 olds swap
the chevy heads were 041 mildly ported same as the olds heads, by the way the olds heads are number 7 with bigger valves. the turbo 350 olds trans is the same as the chevy exept for the bolt patern. thanks for the reply

Re: 350 olds swap
I ran manifolds from a diesel (big block will also work) since they had large ports already. I had a 350 Olds in a 90 Firebird a while back.
If you're going to even try headers, the best ones to start with are from a 2nd gen Firebird. Like a 76-79 Trans Am that a had a 403. You will still have to modify the headers AND the car to make them fit, I'm sure.
Good luck, man!

Re: 350 olds swap
ok if you look at how i put mine in sanderson headers will clear by a mile. 1 7/8" buy 3" out. thay are shortys rear dump and i have room for days to fit them. the 2nd gen f body headers are the same as 65-77 a body headers. there is no way thay will fit i have a set and 2 tubes would need to be cut and relocated on the pass side. the drivers may fit. the trans im using a 200-4r. im still up in the air about keeping the stock supension or putting latter bars in. spohn has a trans mount set up for the 2004r that will keep the torq arm also. the only thing i dont know is with there mount will move the engine. i may just fab one. i like where the engine is sitting its just off the fire wall. plus it gives room to mod my oil pan out about 6" .

arguably an underperformer (you might have a better case with an Olds 455),
but its ok to put a chevy 350 in a 70 442. im a big gm guy. i like them all. here is what i found. chevy only guys think its the end all of engines just becuse you can mis match parts and still make them run fast. oh yah and its cheep. i have less in my olds 362 than a 377 i did in a 83z. dont catch me lieing that 377 was hoss. and to defend the 377 it had dart heads. so the price went up more then what i have in a big block headed olds small block. all im saying is you need to think out side the box befor ******* something else. i like diffrent. look around how many camaros do you see. its a world of 305 and 350s. i do like the bbc in the third gens. torq baby torq.

yea i do post on rop from time to time. my username is redcutless.
u said ure using sanderson? i noticed u said 1 7/8 do they make them that size, i thought they only made them 1 3/4. in another post u had u said u had to use the front two holes for the motor mount. why? what did u do with the frame mounts? did u drill holes? or did u use the original frame mounts that came with the car.

Re: 350 olds swap
my car is not done yet. i still need alot of parts. look on sandersons site thay came out last year i think the part # is 0351 and 0351L. i have not got the headers yet. thay give the specs on the site. on the block there is three bolt holes. the k member is so far forwerd the mounts had to go in the front holes rather then the midle. i just used the stands from a 74 h/o. there are 2 diffrent stands make shur you get the low ones. the engine could go down 1-1 1/2 but its just right. with the offy 360 i can still get a 2" air cleaner and close the hood.

Re: 350 olds swap
tack weld the stands then drill holes. there will be a 1/4-3/8" over hang on the stands. if tou have the older stye like i have you will only get 2 bolts in out of the 3. if you have stands out of a 78 and up cutass that only takes 2 bolts in the center top and bottom of the stand thay should work as well. my frame mounts are just for fitment. im making a engine plate.
