block interchange???

I got my car minus engine and trans 87 gta automatic...
I just talked to the guy I got the car from, he still has the trans and only wants 100 dollars for it. seems like a good deal to me.
I was planning on putting an older carbed 350 chevy with a turbo 350 tranny... obviously if I can put the 700r4 back in there for 100 dollars, that would save a LOT of headaches.
I know about the tv cable issues and the lockup needing to be rewired and such... but I was talking to a "chevy" friend, and he told me that I won't be able to bolt up the 700r4 to an older engine.... that the block is different on a carbed 350 than it is on an injected 350, in particular, around the area where the bell housing bolts on, and that it won't line up. is there any truth to this?

Car: 86 Iroc-Z
Engine: 310ci soon to be 355ci
Transmission: built 700r4
Axle/Gears: I think 3.08s
Re: block interchange???

No difference between a carb or FI trans. Only thing youd have to worry about is if the 700 is a V6 trans( diff degree trans) the only thing youd have to worry about on the turbo350 is the clutch packs, V8s had the bigger ones and the V6s had smaller clutch packs. I may stand corrected but pretty sure thats correct.

Re: block interchange???

hmm, it may not be a 700 then... its SUPPOSEDLY the original out of my gta, and according to the vin, it was originally a 350 v8 equipped car. so if a 700 is a v6 trans.. I have NO idea what this one is, LOL

Re: block interchange???

no no no, Theres two trans theres a 700 for a V6 and theres a 700 for the V8 since your car is a V8 car then if thats the orig 700 then its for a V8.

Yes any chevy 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 sbc can be bolted up as long as its a chevy bolt pattern same goes for big block chevys.
With the turbo 350 you don't need a TV cable that trans runs off of vaccume. Both trans are good but the 350 is most used on the track behind big blocks. Some say the 200r4 is a stronger trans then the 700r4 both have there pluses and minuses. The 200 is and even geared trans while the 700 has the most agressive first and second, the 700 from what iv heard burns the clutches over time. I had a trans with 80k checked out and the clutches were shot.
What are your plans for the car?
Mine I'm doin a 355 carb swap, I'm tired of the efi crap.

my plans are to just make a streetable "toy"/daily driver. I'm on disability and don't have to go to work, but I do have to take my daughter to school and pick her up. So it will see a LOT of in town driving. I'm not going to go to crazy with it. I was thinking just a stock 350 4bbl out of ...well, whatever I find, LOL.
If I had the money I'd just buy a car with a running engine and swap it over. But its kinda hard to pass up that 700r4 for 100 dollars knowing it will match up with the mounts and the shifter. Some have told me that a th350 will require custom crossmember, some have told me my crossmember will be ok, etc etc. some have told me I'll need an adapter for my speedo cable if I go th350, and different shifter, etc.
A lot of the decisions on this project are really up in the air.

Well the 350 is about the same length as a 700r4 but the cross members are different, I wouldn't say you need a custom cross member cause you can buy them from hawks thirdgen. I'm not sure on the speedo cable but pretty sure there's a cable you can get that will work with your speedo. What's the deal on the 350 motor? Is it stock? There's some pretty good deals over in the parts for sale section that you can find if you look. A decent upgrade like headers and intake are a good start to a project.

Re: block interchange???

right now there is NO motor. It was originally a 350 TPI automatic, but the guy I got the car from kept the engine and trans. The car still has original shifter in it, headman headers, headman Y-pipe, hollowed out cat and dyno dynomax cat-back, motor mounts are still on the frame, came with original driveshaft an the original crossmember. So, I'm still looking for a motor and trans.

Re: block interchange???

Idk its a 305, be good with a LT1 cam and a nice intake. I had hedman shorties and the same exhuast headers back minus cat and that really woke the car up. But I have TPI so power will be dropped alittle with a carb.

Only the 9" tailshaft (truck, van typically) TH350 is the same length as a TH700R-4. The majority of TH350's were 6" tailshaft. Either one has the mount located in a different place than the TH700R-4. However, you do not need an adapter for the speedometer cable if your speedometer is cable driven.

The '82-'83 TH200C and 4-speed manual transmissions used in 3rd gens were the same length as the 6" tailshaft TH350's, so one of those driveshafts and crossmember will work with a short TH350.

Then you need to provide a means to mount the torque arm.

Re: block interchange???

I said about the same length as the 700r4. But thanks for the correction.
I forgot about the 200c in the early model camaro.

Re: block interchange???

thanks guys.... I'm VERY appreciative for all the info. Now I have NO idea what I'm doing, LOL. I can see so many pros and cons of going either way.
which tranny would you guys use? pick up the 700r4 for 100 bucks and mess with the lock up and the TV cable? or look for a th350 and mess with the mounts?

Re: block interchange???

Well you mentioned your gonna use it around town, the 700 is good enough for that. Plus just get it built so you won't have to rip it out later on if it desides to give out. Its best to stay ahead and do things right. A lock up is when all the power from the engine is directly transfered to the trans without converter slip, thing its used for is fuel milege. Good luck and hope what we all said helps.
