What engine can over 300 HP and be emmisions legal?
I am looking for a more powerful/faster engine to replace my 'slow' LB9 305 engine in my 1989 IROC 'vert. I am operating in a $3,000 budget. What engine will be the best canidates for me? I am considering the 383 engine, but does it past emmisions easily (the sniffer)? I also would like the engine to easily accept the current TPI setup that I'm using on my 305.
In short, is there a powerful engine, under $3,000, that easily runs with my TPI setup, installs easily, runs okay with my automatic transmission, and pass emmissions? I must become the king of the road around here in Marietta!!!
Thanks!

The 350 was available in your year. Start there. An emissions compatible step-up cam, emissions legal aftermarket heads, ported TPI (check tech articles), emissions legal headers, emissions legal high-flow cat, and emissions legal high flow cat-back are all readily available, and would easily push you over 300 HP within that budget.
I'm not sure 300 HP would make you king of the road, though.
