400 gas sucker

ok. my source for my 400 just fell through so im reconsidering getting a 350. what is an estimated gas mileage for a 400 with a 850 carb. thanks
also...will a carb automatically make the car NOT pass emissions? what about a throttle body. i would like to pass emissions engine wise...i will have to swap my exhaust manifolds for the long tubes when inspection time comes around. What exactly WOULD cause you to fail...cam, headers, what else. thanks

Man if my camaro were a rice-rocket all those mods would give me what...easily 50-60 hp!!!

carbs make it REAL hard to pass emissions, a 400 that needs an 850cfm carb will most likely be quite stout and therefore I doubt that with the cam and heads and exhuast and such that u would likely pass anyway. I failed with a 3 inch cat

That catalytic converter disguised as a U-Haul trailer...you may have to help the smog station techs out with that!

With an oxygen sensor and cat you should be able to tune a carb to pass emmisions. It might be harder with a large engine and carb.

No. Negatory. No way. Stop. Cease. Desist.

In LA, you pull into the smog station with a carb, you flunk as soon as the hood is opened. And, they will open it. Speaking as a former resident of San Diego. 1990 Thirdgens did not come with a carb in any way, shape, or form - you will not pass!

Stick with the TBI, or convert to TPI. You should be able to put on a larger TB if you keep the TBI on a larger engine.

There are Super Comps shorties that have the air tubes and y-pipe to connect to the cat. Keep the fact that it is a 350/400 very, very quiet.

ok....that carb idea is way gone. now im goin with DFI...only a little more expensive. anyways...how restrictive are the shorty headers compared to 1 3/4 long tubes?
are the 1 5/8 long tubes emissions legal??
thanks guys

I'm surprised you get any low end at all out of those 1-3/4's on a 305. The 1-5/8's would be a little more restrictive, but would probably still be enough on a smog engine - certainly better than stock manifolds. SLP makes 1-3/4" if that's what you really want. To the best of my knowledge, there are no full-length headers that are emissions legal for thirdgens.

Are you sure DFI is emissions certified? I haven't heard that it has EGR.
