I think i read somewhere that the one piece mains started in 87. Im not sure though. I do know that there are always 2 categories with our parts and stuff, pre 87 and 87 and up. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will be able to answer your question.

As I understand it, 86 was when Chevy started to go to the one piece rear seal. 87 was when they went to centerbolt heads and roller blocks. But, even then, you can find examples that are not as they are suppose to be. GM just doesn't toss the unused parts in the dumpster and have a history of using them when they advertise something else.
According to ALL the GM literature, an L98 GTA is SUPPOSE to have 4 wheel disk brakes. Mine has aluminum drums. Often, GM may have a couple of differing parts for the same year and it comes down to a specific VIN# to determine which came on yours.

I don't think you can say for sure. The best way to find out is to remove the torque convertor cover, shine a light up there, and see if the aluminum holder for the one-piece seal is there. If it's all cast iron, it's a two-piece rear main seal.
I wasn't looking for that in particular when I had my cover off, but I don't remember seeing anything aluminum (I have always assumed it is two-piece). I know what it looks like, because I have an '87 LB9 setting in the garage that definately is one-piece.
I'd be willing to put a Washington on it being two-piece. With what Glenn said, I'm probably only 50/50 on keeping my money.

86 is the year when the rear main seal was changed to one piece. but, i have heard that a lot of lg-4's from 85 made it into 86 so its best to visually verify that it has a 1 piece or 2 piece rear main seal.
