305 rebuild....

hey all,

I am planning on removing the 305lg4 from my firebird, i've never done this before but i have a good knowledge of everything, i know how to do everything but one area im a little in the dark on... disconnecting the tranny, a 700r4. do i just unbolt the outer bolts that go around under the car or what?? i know there is something else that i would have to disconnect.. and those damn Haynes manuals dont really tell you much and doesnt even have a pic of it =\

thanks

If you are talking about removing the trans from the motor yes all you have to do is unbolt the bolts in the bell housing and it will com off. I would suggest however, unbolting the torque converter bolts. There are 3 bolts that bolt the flywheel to the toruqe converter. Unbolt them and he whole thing will be easier. Do the torque converter bolts while you have the engine and trans up on the cherry picker then set iton the ground and unbolt the bellhousing bolts. hope this answers you questions

Later,
Lars

To separate the engine from the trans... here's how you go about it.
First thing remove the inspection cover and unbolt the torque converter.
Second unbolt the rear of the torque arm pull the bolts out.
Third, remove the driveshaft.
4th unbolt the trans crossmember from the body and let the trans down as far as the motor mounts will let it.
5th. remove the trans cooler lines
6th remove the middle bolts for the bellhousing
7th remove the top bolts from the bellhousing, need about 3 feet of extension becuase you take the bolts out laying behind the trans look over top of the trans from the back an you will see the top two bolts... with the extension it's easy
last support the trans and take the last two (bottom) trans bolts out and separate the trans from the motor. . jack the trans back up and bolt the crossmember in. to hold it tehre.

I assume that you are talking about leaving the transmission in the car and just taking the motor out. Along with the bellhousing bolts that you will need a long extension for, take the flexplate dust cover off, undo the three torque converter bolts, put something under the front of the tranny to help support it and pull the engineforward then up. This will save the hassle of pulling the tranny, driveshaft, etc..
