you will need to drill six steam holes in the 350 heads using the 400 gaskets as templates.the 350 heads will raise the compression of the 400 alot
so would it be better or worst and would it work? about how much compression? has anyone ever done this?

Probably depends on what 350 heads.
Grab some votecs off ebay. I paid $320 for mine. That will be the best bang for the buck. Compression would be around 10:1, but it depends on what shape piston you use.

Most 400s came with the same garbage that 350s also came with, namely, 882s.
People put all the same heads on 400s that they put on 350s all the time. They're the same thing. In fact, I put a set of 6085 Performer RPMs on a friends 434 not too long ago. They fit fine, you just need to drill the steam holes if you're going to run it on the street. Use a compression ratio calculator to figure out what parts to use to get the CR you want, there are about a million of them all around the internet; just for an approximation though, 76cc heads on a flat-top 400 will give you about 10.4:1.
