changing out 305 for 350 ram jet engine, help!!!

changing out 305 for 350 ram jet engine, help!!!
I have a 1987 TransAm GTA that I want to swap out my 305 for a 350 ram jet engine. Has anyone done this without cutting the hood? I am concerned the new engine might be to big to fit under the hood. The schematics say I need 9 3/4" clearance from the front of the block to the top of the engine. Since my 305 is still in the car I can't see where I am supposed to measure that distance.
