Motor Swap Questions
Motor Swap Questions
I just swapped a 350 truck engine into a 87 Z28 that orginally came with a carbed 305. I am having a few problems that someone may be able to give me some advice on.
1)The oil filter blocks the exhaust pipe from connecting to the manifold. Can I get an adapter for the oil filter, or do I have to reroute the exhaust pipe?
2)will the CC carb still work with out any of the smog equipment still attached or should I get a manual carb?
3)Do I need an oil cooler? I'm not sure if the old 305 had one.
Thank You for any imput.

1) You'll need to use third gen exhaust manifolds or maybe use a shorter filter.
2) no idea
3) Engine oil cooler? Probably not. Most cars don't have them including my race car.

87 IROC-Z Pro ET Bracket Race Car
383 stroker (carbed) with double hump cast iron heads and pump gas
461 Big Block installed and ready for the 2001 racing season
Best results before the 383 blew up
Best ET on a time slip: 11.857 altitude corrected to 11.163
Best MPH on a time slip: 117.87 altitude corrected to 126.10
Altitude corrected rear wheel HP based on power to weight ratio: 476.5
Best 60 foot: 1.662
Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

your carb will work but it will probably not work as well a non computer controlled carb. My advice is to buy a new non controlled quadrajet or a used one and rebuild it. I unhooked the computer garbage on an old monte carlo I had and it really started to drink gas.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it (unless you can make it better)." I added that last part myself.
Going non-CC will not make it "better". In a lot of ways, it'll be worse: gas mileage, TCC lockup, emissions, for instance. The only things that will need to be made "better" on the CC carb/ignition are secondary rods/hanger and air inlet (unless you already have the dual-snorkel air cleaner). The first is tuning, the second would have to be done with a non-CC carb/ignition.
Now would be the time for headers and high-flow cat & exhaust. The 305 pieces choke a 305, let alone a 350. That will solve your exhaust/filter interference.
