327 in 89 Formula
327 in 89 Formula
I have a 69 327 sitting in my garage that was for a different project, but I decided I want to put it in my Formula. It is bored .030, and has a cam (Stock for 350hp 327). It has .488 lift on the intake and exhaust. I don't have heads on it, will the stock ones on my 305 work? I would have a valve job done, but don't have the cash to pony up for new heads. I also want to use my TPI setup. Will all of this work? What do I have to do to the computer? Thanks for your help.

The 327 is a great engine, but 305 heads will kill it. It will run, but compression will be very high, flow will be very low, and that cam will stress your press-in rocker studs and stock 305 springs.
You would be much better served getting heads with 1.94 or 2.02 intakes and 1.60 exhaust valves, better flowing ports, and 64cc chambers. World S/R Torquers or Sportsman II's would be a big impovement, come with screw-in studs, and springs can be matched to your cam. There are more choices as well. You didn't say what year your Formula is, but if '87-later, you'll need heads that work with the center two intake bolts being at a different angle.
The dipstick will be on the driver's side, and won't fit with your stock manifolds. Headers will most likely cure that, or get a pan with the dipstick in the side wall on the passenger side.
Your computer won't complain much, but you might want to find out what the cam lobe seperation is (too little might confuse it). You'd get more performance out of it with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and peformance chip. Certainly go with the AFPR, even if the chip has to wait until later.

there were no '69 327s. you might want to check again and see what you have. 327 is a 4" bore by 3.25 stroke. get the engine id off the pad in front of the right head and look it up at www.mortec.com

I have to disagree!!! I have a LJ 1969 327 on the stand right now...The crank castinging # is 3941174 cast and was used in 307 and 327 blocks...I could get the block casting number when I go home next time if you would like more proof.. Kevin

Absolutely. 327's last year was 1969, and as said, the '68 & '69 versions had the large journal cranks (got bit by that when overhauling a 327 truck shortblock for my '57 in 1972 - got the wrong bearings, but NAPA exchanged them).
