Chevy 355 Oil Pressure

Hey guys, on a 355 what oil pressure should I be expecting? It starts high when cold, 40-50, but once warm drops to 12-15 sometime going back to 20. Is this normal? Seems a little low to me, but I am new to the engine. Thanks.

Re: Chevy 355 Oil Pressure

Dont know if this will help or not, But I have a ZZ4 350 that runs between 10-15psi when idle at operating temp(180-195). and between 40-45 when crusing.

The rule-of-thumb is 10 psi per 1000 RPMs when warm.

40 psi is factory stock for the typical SBC. Surprising to me, my 6.5 turbo diesel only runs 40 psi.

(FWIW, my ZZ4 pump runs a lot higher than that, more like 70 psi cruising warm and 40 psi at idle warm.)

really? You think the PSI on my ZZ4 is to low?

40psi at hot idle, thats not to high?

Mine was a SDPC pump/pick-up/pan take-off kit. The engine is a rebuilt ZZ3. So, it may be different than a factory fresh crate ZZ4.

It's a little higher than "usual" or "necessary", but not "too" high.

Re: Chevy 355 Oil Pressure

No worries on the jacking, I am trying to absorb all the info I can. This friday going to do an oil change and take a look at the oil pump. Can you buy a high volume pump locally usually or order them? If order, from where? Thanks.
