400

Trying to build a 400 and keep running into walls.1st thought i would try the edelbrock rpm performer package then someone told me there cams aren't to hot, they suggested comp cam and dart heads. Does anyone know how good the rpm performer package is or have any suggestions.(all are welcome)

There's a guy on another BB that has the RPM Package in his '65 Chevy Pick-up and it does 12.70's @ 104, engine only.

His homepage is down right now or I would have added it to this reply.

My buddy and Numidia Raceway Street Eliminator Track Champion Jeremy Kunkel has a 70 Chevelle 355, Performer RPM heads, cam, intake, and Edelbrock 750 carb. Runs 12.90's @ 104mph

------------------
'88 IROC TPI 355, '69 truck 4-bolt, fully balanced, 9.75:1 compression, fully ported '70 truck heads(for now), Harland Sharp 1.6 Roller Rockers, Comp Cams CS 252AH-12, ported '86 TPI converted to speed density, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster 3in. exhaust, Edelbrock TES headers, all emissions equipment is still intact, plan on burning my own chips, many more mods and parts on the way as time and money permits =(
Best E.T. with TBI 305: 16.11 @ 82mph
Haven't been to track with new motor
If you have any questions on converting from TBI to TPI email me at jdkchevy70@yahoo.com
In memory of Dale Earnhardt, I'll miss cheering for that black #3 on raceday!!!

The advantage of the Edelbrock package is its a proven combination. You could probably get a better cam but Edelbrock has done their share of R&D.

Well I have to add another truck running about 12.70's to the list, One of my friends 50 something, I think 54. ran 8.19 in the 8th. Thats real close to 12.70's in the qtr, He is running the rpm package.

Later

Wow, thanks for the info. 12.9 for a 355 Chevelle? Must need some tuning. I would steer clear of Edelbrock if it weren't for the trucks running 12.7!

One of my buddies has a 72 Nova with a 10:1 355 running 12.05 with AFR heads. I would see what AFR has to offer.

The edelbrock rpm cam is a bada$$ cam. The heads are good bolt on heads, but there are better such as AFR's. For the price, it's hard to beat Edelbrock. The 400 is a solid motor too. I'd go with the package, there's almost no way of going wrong with that combo.

I had the complete RPM package. It's a nice deal and the cam is very nice but makes the power up high,3500-6800 so it's not very streetable on a trans...

Really can't say how my 408 setup works, not yet at least, not for another couple of weeks, but I thought I would share any way.
Like you I am trying to keep it streetable. I went with a SuperRam, Dart 200cc, and after about an hour on the phone with comp cams we decided to go with a custom grind cam that's about 236/246 (can't remember right off the top of my head) duration and about .575 lift on both. yea, .575 lift! I thought that was a little much, and with a T-56 turning 4.11s in the rear, Comp cams and the machine shop I am using both agree that it should be very streetable. We shall see. Just thought I would share that.
