what performance parts to use on a TPI 383?
I'm looking to get a 383 built this summer. I'm going to start ordering parts piece by piece, and I want to hear your ideas on what to get. Here is the rules, it will retain the TPI not carb, so the heads must bolt to this style intake. Also I want to keep it on a slight budget, I want the best HP for the money. So what cam, TPI upgrades, heads, etc would you recomend. Thanks for your input.

I'm currently building my 383 on a college student budget, so here's what I have. 190 AFR heads, Edelbrock lower intake, Super Ram plenum and runners, 24lb/hr SVO injectors. To save some money you can go with some other aftermarket runners and port your stock plenum or port the plenum and runners. You can also save some money by getting something like Trickflow heads instead of the AFR's, but why not get the best when heads are what compliments the combination most? Hope this helps.

I did not get a short block.....I got all of my parts seperately. The engine is going to cost me upwards of $4k....maybe a little more.

Paul, You are on a college budget? Man i wish i was on the same buget as you are! And i even goto school part time!
Don't skimp on the heads. Especially with a 383. If you don't want Al (remember to bump the CR 1 point if you do use Al) the Sportsman II's are a good head.
Here are a few sites that have some nice 383 engines:

You will probably want to dich the original TPI intake in the end. An aftermarket intake base is a must. I would recomend the ASM (can't quite remember the name) runners. I have heard they are the best but a little pricey. You can always upgrade the runners later, but i would start with the base first.

Omega.....let's just say that when I got my car at age 16 I knew immediately what I wanted to do with it and since then I've been living like a miser to save all my pennies. With the money I've got in the bank and the money I'll make this summer I should have enough to complete the project. Then I just have to start saving for my 69 Camaro next.

Thanks for the links and advice. I was looking into going for the SLP runners. The plenum will have to stay stock, I can't afford nicer one. I was thinking about some Vortec heads because of their budget cost. I want a half decent cam too, but nothing to fancy, I don't want to increase the reving much higher because of the poor flow of the TPI. I'd like to here from more people who accully run a 383 TPI, to see what they did.
