Cam Questions

Okay, I know this may sound like a stupid question but please, I need help.. I have two bad motors. One in my friends car and one in mine. So we figure, hell lets do it ourself. I have done motor swaps before and rebuit motors and so has he. We feel that we have the ability to do it. Now we have never altered the "stuff" in the motor before. By stuff I mean cam. He just got a 350 "target" motor and we have no clue what heads are on there. How do I know how much lift I can put in the motor w/ the head/cam combo? I figure mine will work, ZZ-4 Head and ZZ-4 cam.. I don't know why that wouldn't work, if I am wrong though let me know.. Thanks!

You're in good shape. You could even put 1.6 ratio rockers on your heads with no problem.

The Target motor is another matter all together. The heads have press-in rocker studs, the springs are lift limited. Plus, it's a flat-tappet cam. The real killers are that it has dished pistons and the ports are restrictive. The best thing to do with a Target motor, if he wants some more performance out of it, is to replace the heads with some aftermarket performance heads, or the 'Vette aluminum heads (ZZ4) like you have. Even better to also replace the pistons with flat tops. The flat tappet isn't too big an issue, as good cams can still be had for fewer dollars than a roller, but with the Target heads, he's really not getting off to a good start.
