What starter 400 w/305 flexplate ?
Have 74 400 block and am using a 82 305 flexplate (w/pork chop). Engine builder says starter wont mesh up, drive seems too short. Will try a mini starter next, but is there something else that would work ?? Or is the mini the real answer since I have headers (SLP) ??

Aftermarket hi-torque 305/5-speed starter.
The stock one will work but from what I hear is a little on the weenie side for a decent 400.

The problem is that there's one hole that the 305 starter needs (or a mini-starter would need, for that matter) missing from the block. Have your machinist drill & tap the other hole then the 305 style of starter will fit. I have the CVR unit on the 400 in my 83, I love it. The OE POS was too weenie to reliably turn over the 305, let alone the 400. I would not recommend using it. I wish I had bit off on the mini-starter about 7 or 8 years earlier.
