New 305 TPI?????

I'm getting a new 305 in the fall to replace my old 305 now has anyone heard or read anything about World products selling 305 heads for the engine somebody told me that it makes a 305 pull up to 270 horse with just a comp cams hydraulic cam and the world products heads is any of this true. I know the heads are close to $800 I'm just wondering if it would be worth my money and would I have to reprogram my computer hopefully not...

I'll answer your question before somebody says "Save your money and spend it on a 350."

I can't give a performance evaluation yet, since mine are sitting bare in the garage waiting for me to have time to get to them. The actual improvement I saw quoted by Popular Hot Rod was just under 50 HP. On the dyno with a TPI, full length headers and a "like stock" Comp Cam, a fresh .030" over 305 pulled 190 HP with three angle valve job stock heads. With just the head change it jumped up to 238. They said the World heads were "pocket ported".

From looking over the as-delivered pieces, the pocket porting should be considered mandatory. Although they are quality pieces, the bowls aren't all that clean. I'm going by the Standard Abrasives guidelines to do mine. I got the heads bare, valves, upgrade springs & retainers, keepers, seals, and a full engine gasket set, along with roller-tip rockers, oil pump, oil pan gasket and the deluxe SA porting kit (and some retainers and valve seals for the 396) from Competition Products for a bit over $850. So, the price you quoted is a bit high, unless you get them already pocket ported and assembled.

Before I ordered anything, I emailed World and asked them for their porting recommendations, saying I intended to use the SA guidelines. Their response was "bowl work", and that the SA guidelines are good. Take that for what it's worth.

Since I'm using a fairly agressive cam for a 305, I thought any flow improvement I can find would be worth it. I doubt you'd see much improvement at all without exhaust improvements, though.

Hummmm I had all the exhaust done last year but.....I think 240 Hp is much over the 190 bone stock....I just wanna make a lil more horsepower to overtake a few more cars out there...the 300 torq is great but when I'm up around 40-50 mph i don't get much punch as I'd like to have.....Are the heads an easy thing to install?? Do they bolt on easily??? What I'm actually gonna be doing is putting the 305 in bone stock with TPI..Then prolly down the road when it hits 20,000 miles which should prolly be a long time from now I'd then change the heads on it....and the Cam

I believe Jegs' price is assembled, but not ported. From what I've gathered, that clean-up makes a significant difference.

You didn't say anything in your post or in your sig about exhaust, that's why I mentioned it. That, and the improvements demonstrated were with a much more optimum setup than stock would be.

Installing the heads themselves is not too big a job, depending upon your experience and skill level. The bigger thing is getting everything off and back on that's required to get to the heads. The best time to do the heads and cam, though, are while the engine is out. Replacing the heads in the car requires just about as much accessory removal/installation as installing the engine itself. Even more for the cam.

I'll go ahead and say it now: If you're replacing the engine anyway, you'd get more of a performance increase for the money with a 350. I'm only going the route I'm going because I can get more improvement for the money with the deals I got on the parts I'm putting together (I've spent a lot of time investigating the options, believe me). If I was starting without a good 305, I'd buy a 350.

Thanx for pointing to my Exhuast I'll post that up in a bit......But I just don't want the burdin of reprogramming my computer.....plus for the speed shop I goto they say it will be very hard for them to reprogram the computer and may or may not charge me more in case they run into problems my car does have 115,000K on it so I'm thinking I'm gonna have to replace the Trans sometime soon soo I'll be needing money for that....
