power steering question??

i am switching my 91 from a serp belt setup to v-belt.

my question is, is the ps pump the same pump for all the years (except the pulley and brackets of course)

what i'm trying to see is if i can just pull the bracket and pulley, and install the old style bracket and v-pulley onto the pump on my 91? or is there a difference in mouting hole/clocking of the pump?

it looks the same as my earlier pumps, but i don't have the brackets yet to tell if it will work?

any info from someone that has done or tried this would be appreciated. thxs jeff

Re: power steering question??

I'm not exactly sure, but I believe it should work if you swap the pulley. I haven't heard of differences between ps pumps in thirdgens...

Re: power steering question??

There is a slight difference in the brackets, which makes the fillertop in the ps pump face the pass side instead of facing the driver side - but the pump is the same - just have to use a puller and get the old pulley off and press on a new pulley.

I swapped the serp brackets in my 1992 over to the 1/2 serp 1/2 vbelt setup, and I love it! No more big fugly brackets! I used stock ps bracket from 87 IROC, and an old school chrome alternator bracket since I swapped the alternator to the pass side (I removed smog and A/C).

However - if swapping from the serp, you will need a new water pump! The serp water pump is reverse rotation, and the vbelt is standard rotation. Also, if you want to move alternator to pass side, you;ll need the alternator from a v-belt car as well - the driver side mounted alternator (serp) has mounting tabs at 12 oclock and 4 oclock, the pass side mounted alternator (vbelt) has mounting tabs at 12 oclock and 6 oclock which is needed.

You an get somewhat an idea by looking at my first post here:

Re: power steering question??

cool! i already switched out the waterpump and alt, but wasn't 100% on the ps pump.

i had heard from someone that it wouldn't work! but from looking at it, it looked like it just needed the old school brackets. this saves me some $.

hey newbie! are you running the factory in tank fuel pump (fuel injected) to the regulator and then dropping it down for the carb?
