Pulling engine in my 86' Transam HELP!
Pulling engine in my 86' Transam HELP!
Hey all, the engine is almost ready to come out. Someone put a 350 turbo trans in this beast as well as a 350 5.7 motor. They put a carb and intake on it also. Anyhow, All the emissions stuff is gone, wires cut everywhere, tranny doesnt go into 3rd gear, oil leaks, but engine is very strong! I wanted to see if anyone knows whether or not I can pull the engine/trans as one unit? It would sure save some time and hassle if I can. Also, anyone know of a website that explains what wiring you do need to keep the car functional and what you dont need in terms of trashing all the emissions bs? Thanks!!!

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Yes, you can pull the engine and transmission together. See the pic in my vBGarage.
The non-emissions functions all go through the bulkhead connectors on the rear driver side corner of the firewall. The emissions stuff can be removed by pulling the bundle that goes to the passenger fenderwell (no further cutting required).

Re: Pulling engine in my 86' Transam HELP!
You need to jack the back of the car up,as high as possible with the hood open. That way it is alot easier to pull the engine straight back and out. Then when you are putting it back, walk the engine and tranny straight back in, then lower the back of the car and your done. RR
Re: Pulling engine in my 86' Transam HELP!
OK so...I got the trans mount out. There was this bracket that the cat was attached to that had some really long bolts attached. I got that loose. It looks like the trans fits into the driveshaft with some kind of spline. I dont know if this is a 350 motor or a 305 but someone has done some work to it. Anyhow, There is trans fluid all over the garage floor, and I have had no luck trying to get the engine trans combo out. Ill try the jacking up the back end tomorrow. I have a engine puller and weight distributor. Why wont it come out? Is there not a spline that slides in afterall? i didnt see bolts on the driveshaft yoke that has u joints. Any help is appreciated. Any more advice for pulling this beast out would be so helpful! I got this thing for 500 bucks and really want to keep it. My first car was an 84 firebird 2.8 litre v6!

Drain the fluids from the engine and transmission before pulling them. You have to remove the transmission pan to drain it. The typical approach is to slowly loosen one corner more than the others and let the fluid drain out over the lip until you can completely remove the pan and drain the rest.
Unbolt the driveshaft from the rear end - 4 bolts holding 2 straps on the u-joint. The driveshaft will then slide out of the transmission output shaft.
The torque arm should also be removed from the transmission. You can either remove the entire torque arm, or just unbolt the mount up at the transmission.
Personally, I removed the transmission crossmember when I pulled engine & transmission together. I don't believe you can get the engine far enough forward to get the transmission tail past the crossmember in back and the oil pan clear of the K-member in front without hitting the transmission tunnel unless you do.
If the catalytic converter bracket was bolted to the back of the transmission, that doesn't sound like a TH350.
