got my motor this weekend
well we pulled a v8 out of a truck that we got from the scrap yard. the truck was driven in and my stepdad deals with the owner a lot. it is where we got my 87 v6 camaro from. we paid 300 for it. we pulled the car to his house at 9:30 and got it back to the scrap yard at 1:00.we are pretty sure it is a 350 and not a 305 but not positive. the sticker under the hood was not clear enough to read. anyone know just by these pics let me know. the truck was a 89. we got the motor and tranny plus another transmission for him for 150. we swapped out the tranny that was on there for a 700r4 and he got some other one for himself. this car is going to be a true junkyard dog when i get it running. now, i haven't gotten this far yet and my stepdad might already have it planned out but won't i need a computer from something that actually uses that engine?

depends, if you use the TBI setup thats on the engine, you need the wiring and computer form the truck. If you are using a carb, you dont

Go to a carb and you don't have to worry about computer.
As far as 305 or 350, back of the driver's side of the block, where it mates to the trans it will have a casting number.. it might even say 305 or 350. Look up the casting number on the internet and it will tell you everything in the world that you need to know about the motor.

Re: got my motor this weekend
great, it is about 45 minutes away from me. i will be there this weekend and i will take a look. now the truck is crushed into pieces by now so if i did decide to keep the fuel injection, the computer and wiring would be interchangeable with any chevy that had that same engine? and if i decide to go carb, does the upper intake have to be replaced?
Re: got my motor this weekend
it is an automatic transmission. so the stock computer that is in it will work with a 700r4 transmission? i am assuming the stock transmission won't work because of the original motor being a v6 and not a v8. or will the one in there bolt up to the v8 i pulled out of the truck
Re: got my motor this weekend

You need a different transmission and computer for the V8.
Re: got my motor this weekend
the transmission that was on there didn't have overdrive so he swapped it out for a 700r4. it will more than likely need to be rebuilt. as far as going carb. what vehicles should i be looking for in the salvage yard? i am going to need the carb and upper intake i am assuming from the other posts if i am keeping the fuel injection what vehicle can i use the computer out of. the truck is scrapped already
anyone know anything else about the casting numbers i posted

All the block casting # tells you is it is a one-piece rear main seal 350. The cam, piston, heads, and induction determine the power.
