Yet another budget vortec build.

I was thinking about buying a 383 crate motor and going that route, but after encountering a bit of a financial mess, I decided to see just how fast I could get a n/a 350 to go for the least amount of money.

Thought id share my ideas.

I aquired a 12568758 350 crate motor with 12k miles on it for $600

Since the motor was so new, I chose not to touch anything in the bottom end. Including the dished pistons.

I bought a used set of vortec 906 heads for $175 shipped.

Had the heads completely redone, 3angle valve job, had the valve guides and boss's machined and new springs/keepers/locks installed good for 650 lift. Also had the heads angle milled .050 which should bring my static compression up to 10.0-10.2:1 (according to my machineist) $415 (seems like a solid way to make something out of nothing)

I called lunati, and the tech line advised me to use the 07102LK cam
.507 lift 235 duration at .050. 108LSA (out of the 3 cams suggested he said this one would put it down the track fastest.) $180 (dont hate me for not using an xe cam)

I found an edelbrock vortec air gap intake for $200 on the classifieds board.

I was told by several experienced drag racers that this Combo would like a
3000-3500 stall converter. I found a slightly used TCI streetfighter converter (3000-3500 stall) for $280

Comp camps double roller timing chain $22

Found holly 670 carb used and rebuilt for $100 (may be underfueling a little bit?)

Misc. stuff like gaskets, intake bolts, carb studs etc.

To sum it all up

350 Shortblock $600
Heads with machine work $590
Vortec AirGap intake $200
Lunati 07102LK cam $180 (with lifters)
3000-3500 stall converter $280
Holley street avenger 670 carb $100
Double roller chain $22.00
All the misc to put it together $100

For a total of $2072 I think this is a pretty cheap build

Im estimating 380-400 hp?

What kind of times do you guys think this should see?

Money well spent?

money very well spent my friend i have been thinking about doing the same thing with the vortec heads 380 to 400 horse power your probably looking at mid 11s to mid 12s would be my gess but dont qute me on that it depens alot on the weight of the car to along with suspension and tires are a big factor if you had drag tires your going to drop your times by a concideralbe amoutn let me know how that works for you

Re: Yet another budget vortec build.

Will do! I cant wait for it to warm up outside so I can put this in my car. Between going to school full time and working full time, I have a limited window as to when I can work on the car. I hope to have this thing in and running within the next month or 2.

It also has 3.73:1 gears and will hopefully soon have a set of 275/60/15 drag radials. Im estimating the car will weigh 3400ish with me in it.
