The emmisions stuff can go back on the car without the computer, the smog pump doesent have any electrical wires and should be considered a pully with air lines on it.
If your engine runs now I suggest that you buy a non cc distributor and carb and put them on it now so you can cut some of the wire mess out of your car now. Its easyer now than later.
The distributor and carb are a very easy swap it just remove and replace.
Your transmittion will be fine w/o locking up on the highway lock up occurs at 40+mph stabel speed. Most of the time its not locked up at all. The transmittion will run a bit hotter so get a small trans cooler to help it out.
You will get a check engine light when you disconnect the computer so you will need to ground the black with brown stripe wire that is on the plugin for the computer. This will shut the light off.
Its a very easy job.
Good luck!

Keep the ecm, just to keep the tranny hooked up, then you can run a switch between the a and f terminals of the dlc to lock up the converter. there is a tech article on this, and i will be doing it in the next two weeks when i swap out my carb and dist
