If you took a 350 block and put a LT1 cam and a MiniRam on it, wouldn't it be just the the LT-1 except the reversed cooling?? What kind of hp could you get with a MiniRam and LT-1 Cam?

The MiniRam is essentially the LT-1 intake... or rather the other way around since TPIS thought of it first. The LT-1 also has larger intake and exhaust ports than the previous L98 motors. If you're going to buy a cam stay away from regular production cams. They are weak performers. The after market affords much better power with the same driveability.

If you want a close match to a LT1 motor snag the Vortec heads and the MiniRam that fits them. You'd virtually have a iron headed, standard flow LT1 engine... LOL.

Nope sorry the LT1 intake has different water passages for the reverse cooling, 8 bolts as opposed to 12 that hold a reg sbc intake down and no hole for the distributor since it uses the front mounted opti, belive it has been done but it would probably cost more to make it work than just buying a miniram and the reverse flow cooling cools the heads in order to decrease detonation with its stock 10.4:1 c/r.

LT1 has 12 bolts and the exact same ports as a TPI or carb intake base. It will fit with a few mods.

John, Don't leave me hanging like that!!! Is it possible and reasonable ($wise) to use an LT1 intake on a "old style" block? This could help me keep building on my 87 T/A 5sp instead of buying another 4th gen!!!!
yes its possible if you have a machiest for a friend. You'd need to change the intake bolt pattern, drill and maybe weld in a spot for the distributer, and figure out how to add a water passage in front with a thermostat. Holley has a single plane intake for $255 just get that. check the intake link in my sig

Ok, ok, I'll pass along what I know since it will be a tech article soon
after it's up and running. There are several problems with the STOCK LT1
intake but the ports and coolant passages are not one of them. What I did
before I started was get a cheap $6 intake gasket from DAP and just layed it
on the intake (already off the car), everything was perfect except for some
of the mounting holes, the 4 corner ones were good. No problem, I took the
gasket as a templet and drilled the new holes in the intake, no more
problem.
Problem #2, in case you havn't noticed there's no rear distributer on a LT1.
I had to drill the hole for it, warning-this hole must be in perfect
location. I used a old TPI base and made an aluminum templet utilizing the
rear two mounting holes to locate the dist hole. Distributer must be shimmed
about 1/4" higher due to the shortness of the LT1 intake. Also must use the
small HEI distributer with remote coil found on 1987-later.
Problem #3, No front coolant passages to return to the radiator. Well, I
just drilled and tapped two 3/4" heater nipples vertically where the coolant
would normally exit the head. I will run 3/4" heater hose to a remote
thermastat housing I found on-line. it will be mounted on the fenderwell. It
will use the same outlet neck and return to the radiator as it should.
Problem #4, must have custom fuel lines made to attach to the fuel rail of
the LT1. About $40 if you supply the ends. Available from Pep Boys.

That's great info! Can't wait to read the full tech article on that. A junkyard LT-1 intake plus a few hundred for machine work beats the heck out of a complete Miniram's cost.
The miniram does have a larger plenum area and larger runners than a stock LT-1, though. It's freakin' CAVERNOUS in there! You can hear echos!

A junkyard LT1 intake, now that's a laugh. When was the last time anyone has seen a LT1 in a junkyard? Almost never I'll bet and if so good luck getting only the intake, they're most likly to sell the whole engine.

I used to see LT1 intakes at www.camaroz28.com in the for sale section. I almost got one for $50 one time.

After the test runs this weekends I might be able to put modded kits together so it will be a bolt-on for people that can't do the work required. They would be totally complete minus injectors, throttle body and distributer. Would there be a market for such a kit? Anyone interested?

Good stuff. I'd be interested in finding out what happens with the LT1 intake. I'm sure most thought about the swap before, but probably never went through with the plan.
I think there is a market for an LT1 kit. The LT1 intake is from what I've heard, much superior than the miniram because of it's equal length runner passages.
I don't think TPIS would be happy though.

its also kinda funny cause maybe just a year ago everyone was saying the miniram was a waste and the TPI set up was better than LT1 intake wise, casue of low end 1500 RPM TQ that in real life you never even see.

And can't be any worse than TPI. Supreme Member

Does the throttle body for a TPI work on an LT1?
How did you do the injectors?
