big block swap
big block swap
i have an 86 that had a 305 tpi. I got rid of the 305 and its wiring, I still have the inside wiring harness for the car. which wiring harness do i need to make the connections? The engine will be carburated.. Does painless wiring make something or do i have to get the computer and harness out of a carbed z?

you dont need a harness unless you are stll using he stock ecm.you can omit everyting and go with a vaccum adv. distributor,no lock up for the tranny,etc.or try to fab t to work wth the big block keep in mind that the carbs that came on 3rd gens were computer cotrolled and pretty small(IMO),if you are trying to feed a big block with that.give painless a call they should be able to steer you in the right drecton

Just follow everything through and eliminate anything you don't need anymore. Examples of thing you WANT to keep are:
Temp sensor wiring
Oil pressure wiring
Pink power wire for distributor
White tach signal wire
Alternator and charging system
Pretty much the basics. You'll likely need to do some miscellaneous wiring here and there to finish off circuits after ripping some of the stuff out.

I'm going to make this as easy to explain as I can.
Take the wiring harness that comes out of the right side fender. Seperate out the blue and green wires. Cut those and set them aside. Take all of the other wires and cut them also. Now take the blue and green wires and use those to wire up new back up lights (I think, I never finished that part). Take all of the other wires you cut, the computer, and associated relays (except the fuel pump) and place in trash can. Rewire fuel pump relay through whatever key operated circut you choose. Go to store purchase drink of choice and celebrate. In other words, all of the circuts you want come through the drivers side fender.
Disclaimer: This is exactly what I did on my computer controlled carb 86 Z with a manual trans. If you have an auto trans you'll need to trace those wires and purchase/install a lock-up relay for the converter.

i got rid of the TPI harness when i sold the TPI setup. I will be running a manual trans, so theres no need for converter lockup. I still have power accessories inside the car, that need power.

All the big block swap info you need is on my page. As for wiring, get a copy of the wiring diagram and decide what you need and what you don't. The only thing I reused was the front and rear harnesses for the lights, everything else I rewired. PS save connectors for things like the light switch, power window motors etc...it makes the wiring a lot easier.

The engine wiring is separate from your chassis wiring. Unless you make a big boo-boo you shouldn't have a problem with you power windows and such.

when you pulled the harness out, you could have left the engine harness on the driver's side. it hooks directly up to a carbed engine.
