90 RS + 86 vette
hey not sure if its been aasked before but my friend just got a 86 vette and hes switching the engine out for his amazing big block and is offering me the engine, I was wondering how easy would the engine swap be (86 vette engine into my 90RS (EDIT:86 TRANS AM)), and what parts would I need to make it work?
thanks Tim
EDIT: I meant to put down 86 trans am not a 90rs i got my cars messed up for a second but i'll assume i'll need the same things.

thanks Tim

Re: 90 RS + 86 vette
the engine should bolt right in. You would need all the wiring (wiring harness) and computer... You might also need a few little things like maybe a tpi throttle cable and different air intake box, maybe a cold air intake...
Re: 90 RS + 86 vette
Get a 90-92 Fbody TPI harness/ECM and everything will plug right up. The buffer box will need to be bypassed to get the speedo working. A 90-92 V6 harness will also run it with a few minor changes
The corvette harness/ECM will run the engine, but installing it is along the same lines as wiring in a LTx/LSx engine
All of the swap parts are common on Fbodys, nothing custom is required unless you down right want it
The vette fuel rail ends are different too, Luckily Fbody rails are very common and inexpensive. The vette rail will work with custom lines routed to them

'86 Vette is MAF, '90-'92 TPI is speed density. You need the other speed density hardware to get it to work with the '90-'92 harness & ECM. The '86 TPI will have things the '90-'92 TPI system won't use such as MAF and cold start injector.
Early '86 Vettes had cast iron heads, mid-year and later '86 Vettes had aluminum heads. The aluminum head engines had an external EGR tube. You may need to adapt that to whatever exhaust you have.

Re: 90 RS + 86 vette
Back when he had 90 RS posted, I suggest the SD harness for simplicity. His dash harness is already setup for it, the swap would be simple. MAF would be unused, it can be present, just not plugged up. Cold start, again not used, just plugging the hole
86 TA swap is equally simple, just with a 86-88 Fbody harness/ECM with the benefit of being more common and cheaper than the SD setup
I still wouldnt reuse the corvette harness/ECM

The Corvette's oil pump pickup and the pan itself will not work - not even close. You'll have to put an F-body oil pan and pickup onto it. The Corvette exhaust manifolds will also not work. You'll need F-body specific stuff there too.

Vette pan is indeed the wrong size

Fbody, or any 1pc RMS SBC pan will fit if it was designed for a 3rd gen

Use 3rd gen manifolds or headers. LT1 is very similar to a SBC externally

Re: 90 RS + 86 vette
wow thanks you guys are a big help, I hope to start this swap soon, and when I do i'll keep you guys informed on the progress.
Now the last question, (I hope), would this change if it was an 84 vette engine, apparently he got another one.

Pretty much all the same things apply for the '84 engine - though the '84 engine isn't nearly as good (that was the Crossfire engine... not one of the Corvette's better moments.)

I did this swap when my 305 in my 92 rs blew.
You will need a camaro fuel rail, exhaust manifolds or headers, TPI fuel pump, a map sensor, and a TPI aircleaner.
I used a 86 vette setup with a 90-92 speed density harness and ECM to simplify the install. You can leave the 9th injector in the manifold just to plug the hole. I doesn't have to be removed.
