which engine to swap
i'm looking to to swap a new motor in an iroc. my goal is over 400 hp. what is the best way to reach this? should i buy an already built up crate motor, or should i get a 350 and build it up? my father's friend was a mechanic, so he would be able to help some.
400HP is not too hard to reach. You can have a motor built (say a 383) complete from oil pan to intake for around 2k that will push 450 or so at the flywheel.

Spyder,
I'm not correcting you, I am just curious where I could have one built for that much. I was thinking it would take more.
Thanks,

your best bet is to go with a 4 bolt main Goodwrench replacement engine. This runs between $1200-$1300 bucks. It produces around 250 stock horses. With an Edelbrock RPM intake, Holley 750 carb, Comp Cams Xtrmeme energy cam (around 276/296 at .50), a good set of headers and true dual exhaust, you should have no problem making around 400 horses. The secret is the cam...the only problem is that you have to run a stall converter if you have an auto...the cam is a little soggy under 3,000 rpms...you can create this power for about $2800 bucks...maybe less if you shop around....check out summit's website...
Look around. Just make a list of what you want and keep track of prices etc. Sometimes you can even find people giving stuff away and you can save a bundle. Be patient. I had school to distract me but I took my time and looked around. Just make sure you get off your a ss and make an effort, there are good deals out there.
