Question about Pulling the engine...

DO you have to raise the front of the car to pull the engine & tranny together, or can the car be sitting on the ground (on all 4 wheels) ??...

The answer is no and yes. You need to jack up the front of the car to remove. Tranny crossmember and other cables the exhaust and starter. After all the bottom stuff is removed you can put it back on the wheels. When I pull them both together. I start lifing the engine and then push the car out from under the engine. My hoist is stationary so there is really no other way I can do it.

Well I know, everything is already disconnected....I am talking about actually lifting the engine/tranny combo out of the car...

I would just jack up the front of the car like mentioned before. If you haven't removed the torque arm already, be very careful when you do. Have someone under the car to tilt the transmission down when necessary. I would also rest the driveshaft yoke on something and cover it in oil so it doesn't rust.

It's a lot easier if you raise the rear of the car when pulling the engine/trans. Then it doesn't have to be tilted as much to clear the front of the car.

I never remove the torque arm before removing engine. I do pull the driveshaft though. If you roll the car out from under the engine the torque arm will slip out from the mount on the tranny. There is nothing holding it to the tranny. Your only problem is catching all the fluid. put a pan underneath the back of the trans. Because the car instead of the trans moves you can catch most of the fluid if you are willing to let it drain. Just remember when you put the engine/trans back in to take apart the torque arm mount b 4 you do it.

Just a side question. Am I the only one who removes engines by pushing the car out from underneath the engine. Ive never done it any other way but i find it very easy to do it this way. I've been able to remove/install by myself.

You can make you own "catch can" for the tranny fluid or stop it from pouring out at all by taping a thick plastic bag tightly over the tailshaft.
