83 Camaro Engine Swap

I recently got my 3rd f-body '83 Camaro Special Edition 2.8l A3. (The other 2 bein '91 RS 3.1l & '96 3.8l.) I bought the car for $500 and it has a bad engine knock (typical for a 2.8 from what ive heard) I want to drop in a 350 but ive been told id have trouble with smog (cali sux) I already have the engine but none of the accessories. The car is straight with no sign of ever bein in an accident and the interior is decent. I want to keep this car if at all possible, but i thinkim better of just replacing the 2.8 and selling it to buy a V8 fbody. any help/suggestions on this would be great.

It's easier to buy a V8 car to start with, in my opinion.

That said, if you swap a motor into a body that was available in that body, as long as the motor is the year of the body or newer, you should be able to get smog certification with minimal hassle, provided it meets emissions standards for the year of the motor.

That means you need ALL of the emissions equipment from the motor, from the year of the motor.

Bring all the documentation that you can with you to the referee station when you apply; they're not out to screw hotrodders (well, most of them aren't); they're there to ensure that the air is as clean as we can reasonably keep it.

ok.. just to make sure i understand everything. to pass smog, i can use any engine that is NEWER than the car and the has to pass smog for the year of the engine not the car.

Montesa, I answered that question in your earlier post.

But, there is a 350 that is certified smog legal for an '83 if you have a carb'd engine. It's called the HO 350 Camaro conversion kit from GM, based on the ZZ4 crate engine. The only drawback is it costs about $4500 plus shipping, you install. But, it is a legal 350, and a pretty good one at that.
