need bbc 427

I have desided to build a n/a 427 powered camaro. What should i get the motor from. I am going to use after market heads and pistons but would lik to find a block that came with a forged crank.

i think any 427 from a car would be forged, maybe the trucks too, but i'm sure you don't want one from a truck. why 427 when 454s are so much easier to find? i'd look at the car shows and swap meets for one short of buying a new block or engine.

The easist way to go is to get a late 70s early 80s 454 truck motor

a good running 454 core is less than $1,000. put a good set of oval port heads on it (781s, 049s or 292s) with a decent size cam in it and you are near 500hp for less than $2,000. BTW most 427s came with steel cranks. Be very careful that you do not buy a 427 heavy truck motor these are tall deck blocks and are NOT what you are looking for. the deck height on a std BBC is 9.8", truck (tall) decks are 10.2".

you may want to check gm i agree on the 454 they evenn may sell a partial 454(minus cam, heads, pan, etc.)from the old ss trucks.if cost isn't a problem thhe zl1 is reproduced with gen v enhancements.

Unless you have some design criteria for why you need a 427 you might as well use a 454. It's just like the small block guys going with a 327.... why? All small blocks look the same. You might as well do a 383+ and make more power. People can't tell what you've got. Same thing applies to big blocks. Do what makes sense... not what sounds like a cool thing. All that matters is how fast you can go. People don't care what you've got (unless they lose ).
