Constructive advice please

Any thoughts on this set-up? holley 650 dp #4777, edelbrock performer intake, isky 280-mega cam 2500-6800 .485 .000 280° 232° 108°
HYDRAULIC. The block will be stock, and the heads are currently being reworked, and fully ported, gasket matched. If the intake isnt any good, I can always grab another, but I already have this one, and its brand new. I prefer weiand products, but this is my budget build. I also have to contact isky as to the correct valve springs, and rocker arms.

305 or 350? What heads?

Not enough intake. You need a Performer RPM or Weiand Stealth.

Re: Constructive advice please

I have the 624 heads..yea the crappy ones. Budget isnt there for the vortecs. Its a l83 350 from a 84 crossfire vette. I have it apart and on a stand right now. Looks like it had a rebuild at some point. I will have to bring my i.d. mic home and measure it. I figured the intake wasnt good for the application, but since I have it, and it was free I had hopes of using it. The weiand air strike is the one i prefered. Any thoughts on the cam selection?

Those heads aren't worth porting.

I'm not familiar with that cam specifically, but looking at the specs, 624 heads and a Performer intake would kill it.

Re: Constructive advice please

I am doing the porting myself since I have more time than money to spend. So far its looking really good..at least as good as anything ive seen that people have paid for. Good heads or bad, they are what I have, so we will make due. I will get a different intake though. My kid is finally out there busting a few knuckles on this car, and spending a little bit of money. He just wants the most bang for the few bucks he has.

While on the subject of the heads, is there ANYTHING that can be done to improve the flow? Im not going crazy with the porting, just doing what I can with instruction from my local automotive machine shop.

Re: Constructive advice please

Good info on both articles. I had previously read the first one, and took my tips from there. Here are a few pics of what ive done in roughing in the basic shape. If this looks pretty decent to anyone, I will continue on to the rest of head. If I have trashed them already I will have to start searching the boneyard for another set of heads.

Re: Constructive advice please

This may be a stupid question, but I will ask it anyway. My valves are the two retainer groove type, do i have to use the second small retainer if I reuse these valves? I cant seem to find that little lower retainer anywhere. If I cant use them, are the single groove valves ok to use?

Concentrate on the short side radius.

Well, it could be argued that they were trash before you started. . .

Re: Constructive advice please

Is the red area the short side radius area? lokks like it should be rounded back and up a bit to get rid of the sharp corner at the transition.
