heres a new one for you?

Alright, 283 sbc is in my camaro, how do i install a harmonic balancer when the crank has no center threads? i have a new balancer and i dont wanna use a hammer and a piece of 2x4 , and you cant drill the crank without it taken to a machine shop.

Re: heres a new one for you?

Sorry, but it really is a case of pound it on or remove the crank. There is no third choice.

Re: heres a new one for you?

could i put the balancer in hot water for 20 minutes which could make the metal balancer expand enough for me to slip it on ?

Re: heres a new one for you?

hot hot hot water will help some, but it wont just slip on. Cold crank + heated balancer will help, but you will still have to hit it

283 harmonic dampers were press-fit, not bolted on.

Re: heres a new one for you?

exactly and if you look on you tube you can see 283 harmonic balancer wobble . I pulled the balancer off, and drained the radiator pulled it, and next month im having the crank tapped for threads , then i can finally run it worry free with no walking balancer.

Curious how you ended up with a 283. I pulled mine in 1991, haven't missed it a day since.

Re: heres a new one for you?

the engine was my dads he beefed it up and had it wrapped up the short block. 12-1 compression, 302 duration, 520 lift, .30 over, dual valve springs and rocker arm studs has double humps on top of it and its fully forged. the engines in the 60's such as this one, are a rare find these days and more durable if built correctly. now a few years down the road sure ill probally go for tubing out my frame and interior and 383 stroke it, or super charge/turbo the 283. but for now this is the 1st motor i have every worked on from shortblock up other than the boring out on the cylinder walls, and a great starting point to learn from with chevy.

Re: heres a new one for you?

well then i can see why you are asking . would have never thought that there was no bolt, then again never looked at the old mans that close either.
