383 build questions
383 build questions
im starting my 383 build, and i already know i dont want to go carb, ive gone between lt1 and tpi for a while now. i already have a 350 block, but its i think from 79, out of a c10. i know this block wont be compatible with an lt1 setup, but my question is, if i decided to go tpi, will i be able to get alot of power from it still. or will the tpi choke the 383s potential. i really dont wanna start from square one and find an lt1 block or motor. i already have this one. id be happy with tpi if itll go on a block that old, and if it would compliment the 383cu in. any advice?

Re: 383 build questions
The factory TPI setup is only good until around 4500rpms. After that the 383 will starve for air. From what I've read and experienced the Superram setups seem to be the ticket for the 383.

A Holley/Weiand Stealth Ram controlled by the TPI system will support a 383 just fine.

Re: 383 build questions
TPI can be great for 383 setups. TPI is great at making torque and 383's make great torque. However stock TPI won't cut it past 4500rpms as pwdbychevy already said. You'll need to use ported plenums, intake, and better runners at a minimum with good PROM tuning in order to get good results. You'll get even better results with a Stealth Ram, Mini-RAM, or FIRST intake. Those are all improved intakes, but still technically count as TPI. You can use your stock injectors, wiring harness and ECM with them.

TPI injectors from what I've read here, most peeps are using 30 lb injectors, minimum of 26 lb, I do believe... and yeah porting runners and intake manifold is the only method of using your TPI...

Here is a good place to start when wanting to go with EFI.

If you keep any of the factory TPI hardware, even if ported, you're condemning yourself to the performance equivalent of wearing leg irons in the 200m high hurdles.

... but then I read your post again, and yep
... You can't dare doubt five7kid... lol... although I think it has been done before, don't remember the article where they compared various TPI setups, you will be better off with aftermarket parts... Joined: Mar 2000

Perhaps this one:
http://www.highperformancepontiac.co...manifolds.html
416 HP with aftermarket base, runners, and TB, vs. 454 at the same RPMs with the Stealth Ram, with more available further up. Admittedly, the TPI-type system made more torque down low. It'll cost you about the same to set up as the HSR, though. And, they didn't even bother running the TPI-type set-up with the bigger cam.
