LT1 vs. SBC

Ok I'm about to buy a 94 T/A LT1 A4 to get the front end off of for my 95 T/A but it has a perfect engine and trans in it all the computer wiring everything is in it for the swap and I also have a 350 chevy out of a 79 Z. For the work involved in puttin the LT1 in my 84 would I be better off with just building the 350 and selling the LT1.
Thanks

Re: LT1 vs. SBC

The best use for an LT1 with 4L60E is an S-10, because not having the distributor at the back lets the engine sit where it should, and the auto is better for traction than a manual.

Re: LT1 vs. SBC

Sell the SBC and keep the LT1, unless you're going to carb it then just sell the LT1 to someone who will keep it FI and build the SBC. If it has the harness an PCM, you won't be sorry you did. If you have a 350 out of a '79 Z28 and it's stock, your 305 puts out more HP than it does.

There are some adavantages of having an LT1 over an Gen 1 SBC

and no, the best use isn't for an S-10, but someone who wants more power over a 305 or a 2.8 and doesn't have a ton of money to throw at it that someone wanting to do a LSx swap would.

Re: LT1 vs. SBC

I'll have basically a car you can drive with the roof caved in. So everything I need should be there. I'm just concerned with things like fuel pump in tank, (i'm carbed) fuel lines, don't want to have to wire the hole car, moving mounts. Things like that. Its not that I'm lazy I just honestly won't have alot of time to work on it. I love the thoughts of having an LT1 in my car. How difficult of a swap is it ?
Thanks

Having a complete donor car is a huge plus.

You can use the '94 tank and lines. And harness if you want. That takes care of the fuel issue.

Use the 3rd gen engine mounts on the LT1. No need for any other movement.

Wiring in and mounting the PCM is probably the most "difficult" part. But, it's small potatoes compared to the benefits. Well, if you keep AC, that's also a bit of a hurdle, since the compressor and 3rd gen K-member argue with each other - either notch the K-member, or get an aftermarket tubular.

Without a doubt, putting the '79 350 in would be a lot easier. But, the LT1 will be the better final product.

I'd agree with Klortho and five7kid, just combine what they said and make your decision.

Re: LT1 vs. SBC

What about the radiator, condensor, a/c and power steering lines will all of that swap over or just hook up. My car came with air but all of its gone now and I'd like to hook the A/C up when I did the swap. And the tranny mount and driveline ?
thanks

Re: LT1 vs. SBC

Radiator you can use, I used the LT1 radiator/fan setup. I have a 4th gen condensor in mine as well, but don't have the air hooked up yet. You'll have to modify the k-member for the LT1 a/c compressor to clear, unless you get a set of swap brackets, if you do a search you'll find out the info on that. P/S lines, I've read that caprice lines will work, again do a search on it and you'll find out on it as well. If it's a 4L60E I believe you can use the original transmission crossmember that the 700R4 used, not for sure I did a LT1/T56 out of a Trans Am on mine, so I had to buy a different crossmember. Driveshaft will can be reused, as well as the stock torque arm.

Re: LT1 vs. SBC

With a proper wiring harness, the LT1 swap will be no more difficult than a SBC swap and yields all the benefits of a modern engine where the carb swap will fall flat
