Re: 350 or 400

If you can't afford great heads, then the 400 will run out of air nearly 1000 rpm sooner than the 350.
Start by buying the mandatory supporting hardware, such as headers and 3" exhaust. Then decide what the build will cost. Whatever's left over is your budget for heads, and the heads determine the power potential.
Buy the best heads you can, but it's hard to choose heads until you know your cubes.
So, if your budget for heads is $400, then you'll be going with used, freshened Vortecs, so go 350. If your budget for heads is $900, then you can afford some good iron heads, so go with the 400. If your budget for heads is $1500, then you can get some great aluminum heads, so choose the 400.

Re: 350 or 400

well thats the nice part, I already have headers and a 3" exhaust. and a 305 that performs well enough to justify spending some extra time on this build if money is tight, soooo 400 it is!

Re: 350 or 400

my oppinon take 350 60 over with some 11.5.1 or 12.5.1 compression if your not using spray or turbo or supercharger this should give you a 410 cubic inches if you use a 400 style crank

If you take 400 30 over its only 406 cubic inches... Dont want to take them much more then this because of the cylinder walls are so thin

I took my 410 and had it in the 9s easy in a full steel body nova

I took my 406 and was high 10s in same set up car with same everything but short block
