ho305 heads on 350 questions
my heads should be done friday, the 416 heads ported and polished with 194's installed. all cleaned up, now i am installing this on my 91 1piece rear main block. it has like 50k on it. a bare bones cam and lifter kit. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LUN-10000LK/ new dual roller timing chain. and all new gaskets.
my question is what head gaskets to use? and should i get a set of arp head studs?? this motor just needs to get me buy untill the ls/6speed show up.

Have you measured how far down in the hole the pistons are? Do you know the cc's of the pistons? Have the heads been shaved, or the block decked?
I wouldn't waste money on head bolt studs.

i've got these same heads on my 355. What pistons do you have? Are they the 4 valve relief pistons? Like stated before, whats the cc's of the combustion chamber? Both of these are gonna be a factor on what head gaskets u are going to need. By the way, how much did it cost you to get your heads ported and polished and the bigger valves put in? I just bought regular arp head bolts, u shouldn't need studs

Re: ho305 heads on 350 questions
the motor is a stock 91 chevy 350. nothing done to it.
the heads are getting done by my friend at a local machine shop. he just told me they were just cleaned up. but he planed for thirty thousands to be shaved.
well since my buddy is doing it. usually its like 60$ a hour for custom work but since its my buddy he gave me a flat rate for 150$ but i made a deal so money out of my pocket is about 75$ i did the porting my self. mostly just bowl clean up and gasket matching. and the heads are 58cc

Re: ho305 heads on 350 questions
i'm not sure on the head gaskets since you plan on having them milled. It's a good thing that they are 4 valve reliefs. Personally i wouldn't mill them at all. Mine are completely stock heads at 58cc and i got to run premium to keep it from spark knocking. I also bought the regular felpro head gaskets that i think are rated for 11:1 CR, but dont quote me on that. So if you mill your heads i would get the MLS head gaskets and you will probably have to end up running real real good gas.

Re: ho305 heads on 350 questions
Well to tell you the truth; I've got a 750 edelbrock which is i know way too big. I've got my base timing at 14-16degrees btdc. This is where i'm getting the best throttle response, plus it's all the farther i can turn my distributor. Spark knocks pretty good on the cheap gas. My speedo is off so i have no clue what i've had it up to. It pulls pretty good till you get to about 5000-5500RPM. And i'm having some trouble with my starter not cranking the engine over after it's warmed up. Not quite sure whats up with that yet though. I'm definetley gonna get it to the dragstrip one of these days. But if you ported and polished your heads then they should flow more air, which should pull farther in your RPMS, I'm just guessing here. Oh yeah, i guess i've already said this, but like i said, my heads are stock, COMPLETELY STOCK. Valves are stock, everything. Would love to get em ported and polished and some 2.02/1.6 put in em.

Clean up the piston surface and block surface. Bring the piston up to TDC. Measure the distance from the block surface to the uppermost surface of the piston. Subtract that number from 0.040", and get a 350 head gasket with that compressed thickness.
Don't shave the heads unless the gasket surface isn't flat. If they need clean-up, only shave them enough to get them cleaned up. Lack of compression won't be your problem.

no i don't have headers, I'm planning on it though. I wasnt' for sure if 2.02 would fit or not. I havent talked to anyone bout it yet. Yeah i thought my starter problem was either heat soak or too much compression. Just be prepared to run premium fuel.

Here's a Video link to my current engine running with the 416 heads. Sorry bout the mess and all, working on tight funds. I'll try and get some more pics up

Re: ho305 heads on 350 questions
When cranking hard your timing is too advanced if it does it after warmed up due to the compression your running...
Back it off a little bit and see if its easier

Re: ho305 heads on 350 questions
yeah i don't really want to back it off, I've got the base timeing at 14-16 degree btdc cause this is where i'm getting the best throttle response. The only down side to running the timeing here is i got to run premium gas and i'm gonna need to get a high torque starter.
