Price for a 454 block

Does anyone think that $600 for a 4 bolt 454 bare block is a good price or what about a 2 bolt for $400 and also what do you think is the better deal?
Any help is appreciated thanks.

Re: Price for a 454 block

Bare block? Depends on the casting. Good casting $400, poor casting $200. You should be able to get a complete running engine for around $1000-$1200 so $600 for a bare block is a little too much when you consider how much it will cost to fill it with parts.

4 bolt mains are not a requirement. If required, a stud kit can make a 2 bolt just as strong as a 4 bolt.

In my area, complete 4-bolt-main 454 engines can be had under $200.

Picked up 4 complete engines for $200 last year.

Okay, that was a unique deal.

So, what are you trying to build?

Re: Price for a 454 block

Well I'm 16 now and I want to start building a higher performance 454 over time, I don't expect it to be done for a while I was just looking for a starting point but do you think it would be a better idea to buy an older one and rebuild it?

Re: Price for a 454 block

I'd buy a complete motor or long block, they went down in price in my area (you can pick one up for around $600). I'm pretty sure the factory rotating assembly can handle the power you'll throw at it, considering aftermarket heads are very pricey for big blocks.

I would however talk you out of the big block if it's going to be put into a street car, I personally think you can achieve more streetable and practical power out of a small block unless it's a full blown drag car.
