I'm pretty sure a haynes manual has a wiring diagram for the starter circuit on it.

yeah ive been looking through it and cant figure it out...but have made some progress lol i switched some wires around and got starter clicking and no more smoke, but its a brand new starter so i know its not fried, so i test it by jumping it and it worked fine with just the one big battery wire on it and i also tried another starter did the same thing so i wired it back up (this is ALL v6 wiring btw) had the big battery wire on the big wires from the harness to give the car power(which it does lights work ,etc.)the ignition wire and the small battery wire so then i tried to start it with the key...nothing no clicking no smoking so starting lol tried to jump it with all the wires same thing no action so could it be a pinched wire or what i have my negative wire grounded to the water pump for now.OH I FORGOT the smoke was happening with no wires connected except the one power wire and it looked like the brake line was heating up cuz i had nothing grounded to the block or the block grounded.

SO I GUESS MY QUESTIONS ARE LOL:
1. could this be why it was smoking cuz the block wasn't grounded?

2.if its not starting could it be a pinched wire or fuse or do i have something wired wrong? please help

thanks
-Josh

http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

Starter has 2 terminals on it, one large one small. There are several wires (batt + and all fusible link wires) that attach to the larger terminal, and ONLY the purple wire attaches to the smaller terminal.

NOTE - there are NO GROUNDS that run to the starter, all the wires to starter should be hot

ok that helps a bit,my starter is weird lol it has 2 small terminals one close to the block and one close to theframe the the big terminal is above and centered between them, and how many fusable links are there i thought there was just the one big one(plus the batt) or do i have to run another one? and i had no grounds connected to the starter i have one on the water pump and one on the body for the batt negative wire then i have the negative wires that arewithin the harness to the back of the block

thank you for he help at least i can get somewhere now lol

Re: V8 WIRING HELP!

SHE FIRES! lol i'm an idiot and had the one wire that goes to the alt on the starter...no wonder it wouldn't work now i just need it to run...then i'm golden...i tried firing it a few times got it to fire but wouldn't idle and now it sounds like the starter is hitting the fly wheel any ideas?

Re: V8 WIRING HELP!

Starter has to be shimmed properly - I don't remember the clearance from starter gear to flywheel - maybe someone will chime in.
