I'm CRAZY! Brace yourself!

I was hangin' around the junkyard the other day and a crazy idea hit me. There are Craploads of old Chevy Trucks in there. Most people grab the 350s and 400s out of 'em, but what about the 6.2 Diesel? That's right......... I said DIESEL. I'm in the National Guard and have been deployed to Iraq Twice. Hummers have 6.2 Diesels in them. Some of the newer ones are turbo charged 6.5s. That engine pulls around a freakishly large SUV that probably weighs 5000LBS BEFORE they put armor on it. That armor has to add at least another 1000LBS to it. Then factor in that it holds 4 men of around 180-220LBS each wearing 75-100LBS of gear each. The engine has ALOT of horsepower and Torque. I think it has the same footprint of a 350. I know it would sound freakish to drive up to the gas station with a distinctive diesel sound coming out of a CAMARO and then proceed to pump Diesel gas. I don't think it would be sluggish. you can pick up 6.2s everywhere. What do you guys think?

Re: I'm CRAZY! Brace yourself!

i'm not a fan of the 6.2's or the 6.5's. i remember when you could buy one new and drive it off the lot and have the lift pump go out. (best friend's dad is a salesman).

there are several people who have swapped the 6.6 Duramax into cars like Chevelles and Novas. they make awesome power. i have a 2002 duramax, and i have friends here where i live that race their 7,000 to 8,000 trucks and run low numbers. 10's 11's and 12's are pretty common on sites like duramaxdiesels.com. i believe the block can bolt up to a TH400, but the torque is insane.

the 6.2's and 6.5's would probably be a little easier, since it's more mechanical. be prepared to invest some time and money into it. and beefing up your suspension too. they aren't light. look at it more like a big block, then add some weight.

Re: I'm CRAZY! Brace yourself!

They are definitely known for being problematic and unreliable as set up from the factory; hence why they are easy to come by. They are heavy of course, but there's power to be made if desired.

It can be done, I remember seeing a Corvette with a 6.5 once. As far as the swap goes, they're more similar to a BBC than an SBC.

A couple of months ago there was a thread going about a 6.5 TD swap into a 3rd gen.

Love my '95 Silverado 2500HD 6.5 TD, but I'd never put one into a 3rd gen. A B-body, maybe.

Re: I'm CRAZY! Brace yourself!

Seems like a really dumb idea to me. Even talking a Duramax or other late model diesel - The sheer weight of the diesel is just plain silly in a car like ours. Plus, you'd be severely compromising handling by making the car very front heavy. Oh yeah, and get ready to fab a full frame - You might not like your car so well after ever seam/corner is cracked because of the unibody flex.

Re: I'm CRAZY! Brace yourself!

if i was to do a swap like this i would go with a Cummings...
the 6.5 is a good motor but the whole aluminum heads dont play out so good. ive seen the heads come.. ive seen the pistons come though them.. tons of little things. but if u were to keep it mild and not to crazy there good dependable motors

Even if you put the sump on the ground, the heads of a Cummins are probably higher than the hood.

Re: I'm CRAZY! Brace yourself!

I stopped in 417 Motorsports, home of the infamous Blake Hughes while he was doing the Duramax swap into a ChevyII wagon that was featured in CarCraft. With all the aluminum accessories, and cylinder heads for that matter,he said they barely tip the scales any heavier than a typical BB Chevy.
I personally think it's outlandish use of time and money, but if someone wanted a diesal Camaro with good results drivability and performance wise, the Duramax would be the best answer.
I hear the 305 guys argue that they want to be "different",but even the most untrained eye is going to wig out if they see a Duramax in a Camaro.

Re: I'm CRAZY! Brace yourself!

IMO 6.5=junk and they sound like crap for a diesel.

I have a friend whose 6.2L just went caput and he had 400k on it(head gaskets were replaced a couple times and the injection pump once).
I swapped a tbi 350 into it(long story), we couldn't get the bellhousing of the 4 speed to line up right so we put a 5speed in it and modified the crossmember. Long story short his 3/4 ton badged truck had a 1ton chassis from the factory to handle the diesel, the truck sat up NOTICEABLY higher once it was all said and done.

Don't get me wrong, that diesel would drop right in and bolt right up to the motor mounts. However its all the other mods that you have to do thats the killer, which aren't all that bad if you really know what your doing but there's alot of time and money involved to do it right.

I would think a bare minimum would be a 6 point cage, stiffer front springs, 4L80E or bulldog, rear end upgrade, custom drive shaft, and lots of body stiffeners. The only question I'm not sure about is if you would be able to keep it cool with what you can fit under the hood of our cars....

Now that you have me thinking about it I could do this without much effort, Darn you OP!
