350 help?

alright well im new to this i bought my first camaro casue i got an awsome deal i paid 800 bucks for it and all it need was a fuel pump it already had a 350 swaped in it ran mint until a few months ago (i kinda beat the **** out of it) and one night the starter went no big deal right? well i got a new starter put it in and all of a sudden my engine is making a horrable nocking/smashing noise no clue what it is so i was planning on just pulling the motor and tranny and maybe either building this one or getting a new one so my questions are should i pull the motor with the tranny together or is easyier to pull the motor alone? thanks

Re: 350 help?

Pulling a motor out of these cars is way easier then putting it back in. I'm assuming it is automatic. You are looking at 5 bolts in the torque converter to separate it from the flywheel, 2 motor mounts, 5? bellhousing bolts, 4-6 exhaust bolts, two radiator lines, two fuel lines, and a throttle cable. Pull it right out the top but make sure you have the trans jacked up a bit so it doesn't hit the ground.

Putting it back in is a tad harder. Take one motor mount off, drop it in place, mate the trans back up with two untightened bellhousing bolts, bolt the one motor mount in, lift one side of the motor and put the other mount on and bolt it in. Finish bolting everything in.

It should take a few hours to pull the motor and it shouldn't take much longer to get it back in. I put a big block (not counting exhaust) in one of these cars in about an hour.

They sell full rebuild kits with bearings, gaskets, rotating assembly for like $300-400. I do not know how good these kits are but I've seen them in summit. I'm sure behind a stock it will do alright.

So you have an automatic transmission?

I'm wondering if you have a broken flexplate. That would explain both the starter issue and the noise.

exactly my thinking to, i got my 85 z28 cuase it has a ""rod knock" no lol its got a torque converter knock and doesnt like mid grade fuel so its a fuel knock lol..\

and best bet is to just build a 350, well stock rebuild with a nice cam and heads, thats just my opinion lol,

what i have is a 305 TPI, what im gona do is build a 350 with 202 heads n re use my TPI but with bigger injectors

I would also take off the 700r4 first.
Here are some useful pics and comments.

Re: 350 help?

BEFORE you pull the engine and start tearing it down, make sure the problem is not a loose/misaligned starter. If the starter's teeth don't mesh properly with the teeth on the flywheel then it will make a ton of noise when you try to start the car.

Also, make sure you got a starter for a 153-tooth flywheel, not a 168-tooth flywheel.

If it truly is your engine, then by all means pull it and rebuild it. They are not hard to do. I would pull the engine and transmission together however. I have done it both ways, and its MUCH easier to bolt the engine and transmission together when they are out of the car than trying to do it under the car with the engine swinging from the crane. You do have to be able to get the crane arm pretty high so you can tilt the engine and transmission to slide them out and back in.

As for the rebuild kit, the cheapest source I've found is http://www.northernautoparts.com/. I have purchased 2 SBC rebuild kits from them and have had no problems. One was for my Camaro, the other was for my GMC truck. They were just basic, OEM quality parts but you can upgrade to better parts like Clevite bearings and such. Shipping was fast, and service was great.

Re: 350 help?

alright well i knew i need a new starter in the first place i got the same one well it looks the same, same size and everything else is the same theres no issue starting its after starting is the problem if i start the car the knocking/load banging sound comes then if i put it in neutral or drive or reverse then the sound kinda goes away could that be still be a starter issue? i would think it would have nothing to do with it since its after i start it. and its kinda weird casue it dident make the noise before the starter **** the bed

Re: 350 help?

Ok, I didn't realize the noise was after the engine was running. I thought it was while you were trying to start it. If that is the case then no, it shouldn't be the starter. The only way I can see that it could be the starter is if the solenoid isn't retracting properly and the gear is still meshed with the flywheel.

Does the sound get louder/faster as the RPM's go up?

Did you remove anything else to get to the starter when you replaced it?

Can you pinpoint where the noise is coming from?

It could be a cracked or loose flywheel or it could be a rod knock from your description. If you can get the front of the car up in the air, and remove the inspection cover from the bottom front of the transmission you can check the flywheel and see if that is the problem.

Re: 350 help?
