Installing engine with Hedman Shorties attached

I'm putting my 350 in tommorow, 1978 block, Thirdgen 083 heads, and I'm using the Hedman Shorty headers.. I've done measurements and it's going to be within... 1/4" on each side, I measure 28 1/2" while the 305 that came out with the manifolds was about.. 25 3/4"..

Has anyone installed their engine with the short headers on, or should I take them off?

Take em off.

Won't work with em on. Not in any production chassis I know of.

Lay em in the engine bay, lower the engine, and as the engine appoaches the right spot, lift em up and bolt em on.

Quick and to the point, thank you, these are quite... interesting to install on a stand, I'm sure it's going to be wonderful to do after a few bottles of MGD in the car..

You don't put the bottles in the car, you know; you put them in the technician.

The more bottles, the more interesting. Enjoy the ride!!

I installed & pulled both the 305 and 350 with Hooker shorties installed. Much easier than trying to install the headers with the engine in the car, particularly since I also installed the spark plugs before stabbing the engine. I don't imagine it would be much if any different with Hedman shorties.

I didn't have to.

If you click on my vBGarage, there is a pic of the engine and trans ready to be stabbed, with the headers installed.

I put the plugs in, haha What a tight fit with those headers on.

Yea, you have to take them off, it didn't want to fit with them on..
I have a 91, and it was getting hung up on just about everything..

Re: Installing engine with Hedman Shorties attached

I had to remove the drivers side header. Once I did, the engine/tranny dropped in easily. With the hoist still attached it's a piece of cake to re-install the drivers side header.

Re: Installing engine with Hedman Shorties attached

I would leave the passenger side header on and remove the drivers side header as it makes the installation much easier. Also it is much easier to install the drivers side header when the motor is in the car.
