bbc in 89 iroc-z power steering questions

hey guy i have installed a 427ci bbc in my 89 iroc-z i have had it together for 1 year now just wondering how many ppl have at issues with the power steering pump hitting the steering box and is there a smaller pump with a remote reservoir ? my biggest issue is not the pump it self it is the pulley is too large and cant position the pump correctly so i have fabbed up a temporary braket and does not look good and of course tilts the pump tward the passengers side making the pump starve of fluid when i make a sharp right hand turn please let me know if there are smaller pulleys for the pump or smaller pump with remote resevoir and pulley that could work
thanks for your time

Re: bbc in 89 iroc-z power steering questions

I have the same exact problem with my car. I tried putting a smaller zoops pulleys i had lying around on it, and it just ruined the pump like i thought it would. I thought about going manual steering, but i dont want the car to be a chore to drive, because i still have a big tire in the front. Im still looking for some info on this too. If you find anything, or if anyone has ideas i would like to know too

I don't recall my power steering pump having any issues with clearance. When I put the motor back in I don't plan on running power steering; you can change to a manual steering s10 setup if you'd like.

yes i know i can install manual steering but when you try to steer 255/50r16 bfgoodrich gforce in a parking lot its makes it challenging as my car is a daily driver and goes in many tight parking lots and ocasionally go to auto x days we have here

I don't know if it will fit and custom brackets would need to be made but S10's with a 4 cylinder AND power steering have a nice small pump with a remote reservoir.

here a few pics of the engine swap and one good one of where the pulley ended up after making custom brakets to try to correct the clearence issue might have to redesign the brakets to give more adjusments and straiten the pump so it does not starve of fluid under cornering

Re: bbc in 89 iroc-z power steering questions

I put the march serpentine brackets on mine and it worked fine with the stock serpentine pulley.... Until I put the tubular K member in. I had the exact same problem. I shaved down the head of the bolt for a temp fix. Later I put on the march serpentine pulley and it fixed it. Still very close tho.

I believe there are manufacturers out there that sell kits for the late model small diameter pump. It uses a remote resevoir.

I saw the pics of your swap and i looked at your parts list. I saw you have the mid mount p/s bracket from march. i bought the regular one and that doesnt work. So i think ill order that mid mount one and try that. Just kinda sucks im out 100 bucks on that deal. Anyone wanna buy a regular bracket? sell it cheap haha

Re: bbc in 89 iroc-z power steering questions

I can't remember how mine fit in but does it really matter? The motor torques the opposite direction?

Also can I ask what headers you are using?!

Re: bbc in 89 iroc-z power steering questions

well its make no difference what k member you use as the steering box mounts to the body unless you run a steering rack conversion and i does matter what way the engine tilt when you give it gas your right it goes away the pics i have posted are of my current setup and read the post as i say why i wanna change the setup and the headers im running are patriot that booboosean has in his post in the sticky section
