86 vette motor

ok guys my buddy want to sell me his 86 vette motor, which is a crossfire setup and was out of a zr1 vette. If I do the swap can I put a tpi setup on top? and is there any difference between the 305 tpi intake and the 350 tpi intake? also if I use the tpi intake will I just use the computer for that intake?

Re: 86 vette motor

I would do a search for the difference in intakes. Regarding the motor, there was no ZR1 in 1986 and it was an LT5 motor made by Mercruiser(in the ZR1). The ZR1 did not come out until 1990. The cross fire wasn't a bad setup but an '86 vette should not have had a cross fire in it. Hope this helps.

Re: 86 vette motor

I am not the brightest but I know those ZR-1 engines were Awesome. What year of a ZR-1 Covette did this engine come from? The only reason I am asking is becuase horsepower went from 375 in 89 when the first ZR-1 was announced to 405 in 1995. Those are sweet motors. It would be nice if you could get ahold of the original fuel system that came with it. Those motors were made by Mercury Outboards designed by Lotus, and you could stand a nickel on the engine, start it up and the nickel would stay standing. Great find.
I would love to see pics.

Many things don't add up about what your bud is claiming. Your first reaction when hearing "Corvette" should be skepticism.

'86 Vettes were all TPI. The differences in TPI, regardless whether Vette or f-body, were due to the model year rather than the engine size (with the exception of the injectors - 305 had 19 lb, 350 had 22 lb all years). Well, '86-1/2 & up Vettes also had aluminum heads, which required external plumbing for the EGR source for the exhaust gases.

Re: 86 vette motor

Sorry that is a mistake on my fault i was thinking z51, with all the performance goodies, but typed zr1. And the engine i believe is rated at 280+hp? I may be wrong on that but it will be getting rebuilt before the swap regardless. Which also is in debate. Just doing some research first.

I beg to differ I've personally seen the vette and Know for a fact it is a cross fire setup which will make the motor an L83 unfortunatley and not an l98

p.s. it may be an 84 not 86...sorry might be confusing my years

Crossfire wasn't available after 1984.

Re: 86 vette motor

As stated above. Crossfire was 1984 only. 85-91 got TPI setups. Either your friend has a heinz 57 and its had an engine swap back to an 84 motor or its a tpi.

You can put a TPI intake on a Crossfire engine. '87-up f-body TPI base had the center two mount bolts at 72 degrees, while the Crossfire engine will have all of the bolts at 90 degrees.

The stock Crossfire was more like 205 HP.

The question is why would you wants to?
CFI has it's fans but is a very restrictive intake without mods.
Would be better to put your intake on the CFI engine
Do a google search on crossfire injection
